I don't support attacking women for being in objectifying media. But I can't believe that at 12 years old I understood that music videos are mostly scripted, directed, produced and profited off by men & thus not an authentic expression of the artist, but we're discussing if it is
Music videos are products. They're designed to maximize clicks- not liberate women. Since I've been a kid a lot of music videos have essentially been strip shows. Let me be clear: I blame music industry moguls not the women themselves for how that screwed with me as a little girl
All of what @WomenReadWomen said is correct: Objectificaitom hurts women and it doesn't matter if we consent to it. The men who produce and consume this media don't view us as human beings. If it was liberating and humanising all male artist be stripping, too. It's that simple.
I'm fully aware that a half naked man doesn't communicate vulnerability to an audience like a half naked woman does, but still some of the most disrespectful and dehumanizing behaviour against men I've seen come with media that focuses heavily on their bodies (e.g. Korean Pop).
*Objectification - duh
How many more of these female (and some male artist) need to tell us theyre being pushed to sexualise themselves for fear of losing their contract? Being harassed or assaulted by media moguls? Sometimes literally pimped? Famous women are still vulnerable to MVAW.
I don't care why & how you've been in objectifying media - it doesn't diminish your humanity one bit (though a lot of cheerers on of #pornculture absolutely think the people in the media are less than), but I've got all the hatred for the men's culture that brought it all about.
Meghan and Cardie are in the front, so we don't discuss these men: 1st one is the video director, the others are co writers on the song. Women take the blame everytime because they're the visible part of this industry, while these guys revel in comparable anonymity and tons of 💰
It's not women's fault for going along with the show. Yes, we can discuss if rich women at some point have responsibility for contributing to this culture (but lets remember they're still repeatedly victims of rape and DV like the rest of us - sometimes by these mf producers!).
Overall the debate being framed as "are women in music videos hoes or feminists" misses the mark by a mile. What r men doing? How r they getting rich? Why are they all clothed? Are men preventing female artists who don't wanna sexualize from succeeding? That's the debate we need.
