ICYMI: @IACourtHR ruled on Friday to protect schoolgirls from sexual violence in Latin America in our case with @CepamGuayaquil, Paola Guzman Albarracin v. Ecuador! #JusticiaPorPaola

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights is the highest judicial body for human rights in the Americas. The ruling requires States in the Latin American and the Caribbean region to:

1) Provide comprehensive #SexEducation to adolescents so they can not only understand their sexual and reproductive rights but the implications of emotional relationships, as well.

2) Recognize that adolescent girls have rights to sexual freedom and self-control of their bodies according to their capacity and maturity, which are evolutionary.

3) Enact laws protecting children and adolescents against all forms of sexual violence.

4) Eradicate gender stereotypes from both the educational and judicial systems.

5) Promote “the empowerment of girls towards challenging patriarchal norms and stereotypes,” thus preventing or reversing all types of discrimination.

The ruling also holds Ecuador responsible for failing to protect Paola from the sexual violence she suffered in the public school she attended. They are required to restore Paola’s good name and make full reparations to her family. #JusticaPorPaola

“This ruling is an important step in our work to ensure that women and girls’ fundamental human rights are recognized and respected around the world.” - Nancy Northup, President and CEO reproductiverights.org/story/landmark…
