Hello New Mum!
Does your hand hurt?
📚It may be De Quervain's tenosynovitis.
🤱🏼Mummy Thumb is the current nickname given to De Quervain’s syndrome and almost 50% of new mothers experience this condition.
🤱🤱Mummy thumb affects many first-time mothers, so suspect this diagnosis when a new mum complains of pain in her hands.
.
A mother may describe it as a sharp, shooting pain starting at the thumb, through the wrist, and darting up the forearm. Sometimes, there may be a clicking sound. Mothers get this because of the way the thumb is constantly bent
when picking the baby over and over again or improper lifting of the baby.
.
⚠️Although this condition often happens after pregnancy, it is not exclusive to new mothers. People who play golf or the piano or type frequently are also affected.
.
👨🏽⚕️De Quervain's tenosynovitis is the inflammation of the sheath/synovium, that surrounds the two tendons that run between the wrist and the thumb. As the synovium swells and thickens, it becomes painful for a person to move their thumb.
.
🏩A sprain or overusing the tendons through repetitive movements of the thumb at work or during sport tend to make the swelling and pain worse.
.
‼️Finkelstein’s test is the classic provocative test for diagnosis of De Quervain’s disease. The patient is asked to make a fist around a thumb and to perform a ulnar deviation. This will elicit pain.
People with De Quervain's tenosynovitis are usually recommended to wear a splint for 2 to 3 weeks.
