Hogan statement confirms resignation.

"It was becoming increasingly clear that the controversy concerning my recent visit to Ireland was becoming a distraction from my work as an EU Commissioner and would undermine my work in the key months ahead."

"It is important to state that I did not break any law. As a public representative I should have been more rigorous in my adherence to the Covid guidelines."

"I fully understand their sense of hurt and anger when [people] feel that those in public service do not meet the standards expected of them."

Hogan to @tconnellyRTE:

"I broke no laws. I broke no regulations... But I could have adhered better to the guidelines..."

Hogan says he "meditated" on the situation in recent days before coming to the conclusion that "this sort of distraction was going to continue" and that resigning was the right move.

Hogan says he resigned himself (@vonderleyen did not ask for his resignation).

"Nobody had to tell me... What the right thing is to do."

"This could be the end of my political chapter..." says Hogan.

Hogan: "I'm resigning in order that people understand I made mistakes... I broke no law... But the distraction that it caused and the hurt it caused" meant it was time to go.

C'est Phil.

C'est Fini.
