If you can’t hear the pathos of the prophets in the words of @realchriswebber, your heart might be completely captive to the Powers that be. #NoNBA
There is a crisis in Christianity. An inability to discern the way of the Cross.
Athletes show more moral courage -risk more personally, professionally, financially, socially- than most pastors paid to teach the Bible every Sunday.
For Christians to not recognise Kaepernick’s dramatisation of injustice as continuity with Calvary’s costly Love unmasks this reality:
Christianity consistently conforms to the Powers and Principlaities that crucified Christ.
No surprise to those on the underside of Christendom. Those on the receiving end of the Saviour’s name blasphemed to do the devils work. Those for whom hymns accompanied the horrific. For whom the Cross was a symbol to sanction suffering, not the cost of opposition to evil.
The way of the Cross is not any tragedy; like cancer, or this pandemic, or losing a child. These horrors beset all humanity. The Cross is not merely a psychological tension to be held in the human heart. Nor a mere ‘mechanism’ for salvation.
No, the Cross is the culminating crescendo of consequences for unfailing-Love’s dogged determination not comply with all-domination, evil, violence, oppression and injustice.
the Cross, is not the defeat of Love at the hands of evil, injustice, sin and Death.
No.
The Cross -seen through Easter eyes- is Love’s victory over all domination, evil, violence, injustice, sin and Death at the nail-scarred hands of God.
How we understand the Cross will determine how we (or if we) take up our own.
If we cannot discern the Way of the Cross, we cannot participate in the life of Triune-Love that undoes all domination.
