WARNING: CONTROVERSIAL THREAD. Reader discretion is advised.
While I agree with @Ayaan I want to expand a bit on a part of the article: "non college educated white people form a big part of Police".
That makes my blood boil for personal reasons.(1/11)
On February 6th 1987, I paid a family debt. I chose to spend my conscription period in the #carabinieri . The reason was simple. My namesake grandfather was one of five male sons in a poor family in the boondocks. 3 brothers emigrated to Argentina.(2/11)
One, Vittorio, inherited the meager farm. My grandfather applied to the Carabinieri.
They taught him to read and write. He attended one of the first #NCO courses and was promoted... in time for WW II. He told my father very little of his experience then.(3/11)
He raised two sons, before dying while my father was still in high school. The Corp took care of him. He became a physician, a credit to his profession. But those were scarce and could not pick any ser ice but medical. But our family pays its debts. (4/11)
So, while attending University, I gave all the exams then went. I was the second oldest at basic, at 25, and I was working on my final thesis in the spare time.
Bear in mind that "privileged" boys like me usually could finagle office jobs, if not exemption. (5/11)
But Economy condem s you to an office eventually, I am easily bored, and I felt the "need".
I ended up in a Bzttalion, whose duties are generally public order, assistance to territorial units, interventions in natural disasters etc. But mainly public order and riots. (6/11)
I did A LOT of that, and being the oldest, usually officer were comfortable with me. You might let a 25 years old alone and he might not f*** up as much as an qi years old. But... after three months we were all up to speed. YOU DON'T NEED HIGHER ED FOR CROWD CONTROL. (7/11)
what you need is a dedicated unit experienced in those situation, AND TO&E plus time do that, and a cruel, clear headed command line.
I had those since my commanding officer was a living legend, who was a pupil of Dalla Chiesa. He even looked like Rommel, and was as good.(8/11)
I was also lucky to lose him halfway, so I saw the difference between a smart, quick professional and basic passive officers deferring to political control without objections. That's where the word "Clusterf***" comes from. (9/11)
Unless you are ready to punish violent threats early, stay home. Unless you can train your men, stay home. Unless you can foresee the implications of your orders, stay home. No PhD in uniform will do. Quit looking down on Police. (10/11)
They, like I had to, had to ask themselves when, why and how to kill a man, having only SECONDS for an assessment. If you think that's easy, think again.
