This man, U.S. Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), is white. Those two characteristics put him at the top of the US caste system.

He has social class because of political power.

And he is either pandering to bigots or willfully ignorant about racism, systemic or otherwise.

Wednesday’s @YorkDispatch “news” is that he gave a speech claiming systemic racism doesn’t exist. Buried in the story is rebuttal from academic research.

WHY was his speech news? It wasn’t “new” nor was it “novel”.

Far too much of what is “printed” or “broadcast” does not help foster an informed citizenry. Certainly reporting on this speech did not.

PERRY’S OPINIONS ARE VACUOUS. They rest on hot air. The headline fosters disinformation.

NEW LEDE:
Black males in the U.S. are more likely to be killed by police officers than white males. Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) claims this is not evidence of systemic racism. Research shows he’s wrong.

Context is always needed for matters of public policy.

Leave “straight reporting” for sports (and stop treating politics like a horse race).

Additional evidence (some in news story)

One more thing. The story of Noah drinking too much wine. And then cursing his son Ham and his descendants after Ham saw Noah naked and passed out in his tent. Ham’s descendants became of Africa over the centuries.

If you’ve not heard this interpretation, you may not be from the south. I grew up with this story; my husband, the son of devote mid-western Lutherans, did not. I was reminded of it while reading Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.

The interpretation was used to justify slavery
