Never had a problem with Hindi on the boards.

Earlier, we were under the false impression that Hindi is our National language and learnt it because of a illogical love for one’s own country.

Now that Hindi is just one of the 22 official languages in India, what is the logic behind this sign board?

Coimbatore is in TamilNadu, a state famous for anti-Hindi stand. Additionally, it is the Southern most state- farthest from the Hindi speaking belt. Then why Hindi?

Apart from Tamils, the largest linguistic group in Coimbatore is Malayalees, then Telugus and Kanndigas. These three are also the neighboring states. Logically, if there is a third language on the sign boards, it should be Malayalam, which is equal to Hindi in hierarchy.

Why Hindi?

Hindi is the official language of the Union Govt. But that is just a lame justification at best, not a logical reason for using it over more useful languages. Do we care about our people more or a language?

I never had a problem with Hindi on the boards. Now I see what this means. Now I have a problem.

Hindi Theriyadhu Ponga. Enga oorukku varanumna neenga Tamizh kaththukkonga.

சும்மா தெறிக்க விடுங்க.
