My PlayStation 25th anniversary story begins awkwardly. I nor my family could afford a PS1 so we hired one (with a full deposit) from Blockbuster video. I had one joyous weekend with Ridge Racer and Battle Arena Toshinden...

Eventually I saved up my pocket money and picked up a PSOne immediately realising I found horror games impossible to play (even though I’m ok with horror films). Resident Evil was beyond intense (On PSVR, 3 generations later. Not a chance!).

At the launch of PlayStation 2 my mum and I went halves. I was a Tekken Tag addict and was blown away by DVD menus and extras. My first being Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... Media Studies called it synergy.

The next gen I attended a PS3 pre-launch event hosted by Phil Harrison in London’s Brick Lane. Highlights of the presentation, Motorstorm, a duck demo and the minimal menu system impressed. Surprisingly PS3 took a long time to come into its own and Xbox took the W early on.

For PS4’s launch in Covent Garden I blagged myself into the private room. With a live set by Tinie Tempa in the adjoining room, I introduced myself & ended up chatting with Andrew House the president and CEO of SCEI for a solid 15 mins about my initial intro to PlayStation...

Mr House asked this fan with genuine enthusiasm for my opinion on the previous generation and was very candid on timed exclusivity and the complex nature of getting deals done at the time given the competition (Xbox just signed Respawns ‘Titanfall’)...

What really sticks out to this day is how all those involved in the conversation agreed how important for PlayStation it was early on to get consoles into gamers hands. I hope that train of thought continues & PS5 is Sony’s most accessible console ever. Foundations are in place.

End note. Anyone excited by the next generation of consoles should be following @foxygames_uk on all social platforms. Pretty much the only account I follow in gaming thats not related to Apple Arcade in some shape or form.
