It deGrom wins the Cy Young this year, he'll have 3.02 Cy Young "shares", which would put him 14th all time, a hair behind Sandy Koufax.
That's good, but you must also consider that the current 14th, Johan Santana, is not getting in. And 15th, Corey Kluber, won't either.
That Santana was one-and-done on the ballot is one of the most infuriating things to me.
Ultimately, Santana's career almost compares to Koufax's, and Santana also retired because of injury. But because he didn't go out at the top of his game, people see it differently.
Santana: 139-78, 2025 IP, 136 ERA+, 1.13 WHIP, 51.7 WAR, 2.72 shares
Koufax: 165-87, 2324 IP, 131 ERA+, 1.11 WHIP, 48.9 WAR, 3.05 shares
deGrom: 69-50, 1149 IP, 151 ERA+, 1.05 WHIP, 37.5 WAR, 2.02 shares*
Kluber: 98-58, 1342 IP, 135 ERA+, 1.09 WHIP, 32.3 WAR, 2.60 shares
Koufax is in, Santana is one-and-done, Kluber has no chance, but a lot of people think deGrom is on his way. I'm not so sure. I think deGrom has a lot more work to do, even if he wins this year. #HallOfFame
