1/ Content hosted by social media companies is contributing to the deaths of so many people for years now, and they won't change their ways because they're basically saying "enough people have not died yet for us to care to enact real change on our platforms."
2/ They allow far leaning grifters (the worst of us all) and countless fake accounts with American flag emojis to peddle and elevate harmful bullshit.
3/ Once again next year social media companies will make their apparently pointless appearance before Congress where nothing actually happens after they leave.
There will be news reports talking about their appearance before Congress, but did anything change because of it?
4/ Sure, there might be viral videos of people in Congress grilling Zuckerberg with questions, but does it really matter if nothing happens to change anything? What's the point? For videos to go viral? That's it?
5/ The fires, hurricanes, fight for racial justice, and the pandemic ... all in an election year, and social media companies appear to be doing the bare minimum.
Social media companies have already failed us for this election year just as they did in 2016.
6/ These platforms place labels on rule-breaking content that contributes in part to death.
Labels. That's basically it. Sure, sometimes they actually do remove content, but it doesn't happen enough.
7/ So the question is how many people need to die before social media companies do something that actually helps in a significant manner?
I hope we find out the answer to that question soon.
