Shanmugam would of course find Chua's op-ed easy to support; while she asks some questions, her conclusion is that Parti Liyani's case is proof that the #Singapore justice system is working as it should, suggesting that the errors are specific/isolated and can be patched up.
But the issue here is that Parti Liyani emerged victorious not *because* of how the system and process works in #Singapore, but *despite* of it. wethecitizens.substack.com/p/the-acquitta…
She had a pro bono lawyer, a bailor, and support from an NGO (who often has to contend w/ govt displeasure). She was determined to prove her innocence, and her family were able to survive w/o her remittance for four years. This is a confluence of remarkable factors.
Parti isn't the only accused worker that @home_migrantssg has come across. Many workers choose to give up the fight and plead guilty 'cos it's a way to cut their losses, rather than be stuck in #Singapore for years (as Parti has been) w/o income. home.org.sg/statements/202…
Yes, the High Court came through for Parti at the end. After problems with the police investigation, after issues with the prosecution, after a troubling conviction at the district courts. Many migrant workers won't get anywhere near this point.
