Update on #ContactTracing for #COVID19 - a thread. Early signs of success from SF Bay Area. Many local counties are approaching goal of contacting 90% of the region’s positive cases, even as coronavirus cases spike across the state. @mikereidmd @SF_DPH…
2. San Francisco @SF_DPH data:
• % of Cases Reached for #ContactTracing over Prior Two Weeks – currently 82%, target 90+%
• % of Named Contacts Reached for Contact Tracing over the Prior Two Weeks – currently 85%, target 90+%…
3. OTOH, lack of transparency makes #ContactTracing success hard to measure. Impossible to know whether Bay Area’s two largest counties have been successful because their health officials refuse to reveal how many people they do reach, and how quickly.…

“Policy Options to Impose Costs on #Beijing’s Coercive Envelopment of #HongKong: Version 1.0”

#NatSecLaw negates #SAR’s judiciary & freedoms

Our #ChinaSignPost™ 洞察中国 report (#102) offers analysis & recommendations…
#HongKong’s long-deteriorating situation has come to a head.

Today, just b/f #July1, Beijing imposed a popularly-opposed #NationalSecurityLaw negating the Special Autonomous Region’s judiciary & freedoms.…

Dissidents are vulnerable; everyone is at risk.
#Beijing has abruptly abandoned binding commitments & reassurances, which underwrote #HongKong’s handover from Britain in 1997, & its subsequent special treatment by the United States & other nations.

Now, sadly, Hong Kong’s identity & status lies damaged & altered irrevocably.

As a repeated target of FAP harassment, all I can say in response to this news is

Lest we misremember and think Fabrications About the PAP was some random anonymous/semi-anonymous page, it was profiled in @Stcom in September 2011. At the time, it was positioned as a response to the anti-PAP views online, fighting political distortions.
Back then, @STcom reported that the page was "heavily moderated, with negative comments swiftly removed". Co-founder Jason Chua told them he wanted it to be a "clean page" where three/four years down the road, "people can read the truth and lies" and decide for themselves.

"Country X has been lucky." "Nation Y has low population density." "Climate in tropical state Z has an impact."

Probably true, but then still:

massively influence a country's dealing with a #pandemic or a #crisis.

Would countries have done better or worse with different #leadership and #strategy? I have NO DOUBT.

Key drivers like #leadership and #trust often seem underestimated or hard to grasp.

This is probably due to #complexity of the matter and that drivers are hard to measure.

The drivers are all related:

#leadership ➡️ trust ➡️ successful execution of #strategy ➡️ empowered leadership ➡️ #trust

#Communications is the glue.

#Singapore: Many Singaporeans have asked me why PM @leehsienloong is rushing #GE2020 when our #covid cases are still on the uptick. If parliament is dissolved, it will be a shotgun GE. Sgreans have been bombarded by PAP speeches & media appearances, and now let’s go to the polls?
#Singapore: Also, shouldn’t Singaporeans be given a little more notice? This PM address feels abrupt on a day when people are inundated with flash floods while social distancing, and many are anxious about their job prospects. Politics not on ordinary people’s minds. #covid
#Singapore: Mic drop. 🤣 ‘GE like no other’. Yeah, more unfree and unfair than before! #GE2020 #Covid

I've got a ton of writing to do and I'm procrastinating again, so I'm going to do a little thread about #Singapore, #COVID19, and eggs

Our main supply is yolked to #Malaysia, which in 2018 provided for about 73% of our needs. So with #COVID19 and movement restriction orders in our neighbour, there were concerns that food supply — including the precious telur — would be disrupted.…

It's nice that 80% say they're willing to pay more if it means the workers get paid more, but the way we keep asking this question—"would you pay more?"—is a demonstration of how often we focus on "pragmatic" policy tweaks rather than fundamental principles and rights.
According to the survey, the majority of the top essential jobs identified are also jobs that are paid some of the lowest wages, with very little labour protection. Some of these jobs are also socially stigmatised as low-skilled or dangerous.
400,000 out of 1.37 million Singaporean households (about 30%) have been identified via government help schemes as lower-income. How many of them contain essential workers?…

Let’s interrogate where these people are coming from. Let’s first discount the fact that the colonial govt destroyed the indigenous settlement, dynamited the #Singapore Stone (surviving fragment features an undeciphered script) etc. If we ignore what they did...

... are we at least able to acknowledge that neglect for #history, #heritage, culture has still been going on since independence in 1965? If you don’t want to “ape the West”, then maybe you can recognize how hypocritical our local approach to heritage and culture can be?

Last year there was so much talk about how groups other than the British contributed to the rise of “modern Singapore”. Yet here we are in 2020, our own govt having bulldozed 19th-20th century villages, cemeteries & monuments. And enforcing racial boundaries too.

This tweet admits the reason why a number of lawmakers have supported the #AntiTerrorBill and confirms the concerns and sentiments of those who oppose it--that it is to quell dissent toward the #DuterteKakistocracy and to clamp on free speech and the freedom of the press.
To begin with, all the countries mentioned in the senate president's tweet have either undergone oppressive governments under tyrants, registered poor ratings in free speech and press freedom, committed gross violations of human rights, or even banned religious freedom.
Thailand, for instance, had been ruled by men in uniform for 55 of the 83 years from 1932 to 2009. And it was ruled by a military junta from 2014 to 2019. Its politics also has a frammework of constitutional monarch. It may also be recalled that in 2007, a military

THREAD: For @politico I mapped out which countries are doing best when both their health and economic #coronavirus outcomes are considered - see here, with @beatricezjin.

#Vietnam is the clear best performer; the US ranks just 24th of 30.… #COVID
#1 Vietnam: The easy ranking leader as the biggest country with no COVID-19 deaths (95m), barely 300 cases, and economy still set to grow 2.7% in 2020.
#2 is #Taiwan: They avoided the need for a full lockdown by taking early action in January, proving that containment was possible despite proximity and other links with China. Still, with 70 percent of GDP linked to exports, Taiwan's economy is on track to shrink 4 percent.

It's important to build on this thread and talk about this new law that @HouseNGR is trying to ram through...
The Infectious Diseases Act is meant to replace the National Quarantine Act of 2004, and it was mainly sponsored by @femigbaja.

According to its sponsors, it seeks to provide a legal framework for relevant authorities to manage disease outbreaks.
The bill has been found to be problematic however, close scrutiny by @DavidHundeyin showed that it was plagiarised from #Singapore's Infectious Diseases Act of 1977

There have been 2 types of #covid19 cases at the bedside that have been very tough

1/ those who literally *cannot* social distance bc of immense social challenges

2/ those who did not social distance bc they chose not to

cc @bmj_latest…
2/ The first is not new. We know that health inequities kill. #covid19 is no exception. It is easy to say #stayhome (I have tweeted it many times)- but for patients that live w/ 5 others in 1 bathroom, home can be a dangerous place once someone gets infected.
3/ We are seeing the failure to address inequities resurface all over the world. Today in @nytimes w/ #Singapore migrant workers who are cramped together in tiny living quarters.

1/ Today I've seen/heard more than one American take that #Singapore's spike in #COVID19 cases is due to easing social distancing measures too quickly.

I'd like to do a thread about what's really going on in Singapore and what lessons can be learnt from it.
2/ Firstly, #Singapore's #COVID19 spike is *not* to do with the easing of social distancing measures. Social distancing measures in Singapore right now are the toughest they've ever been. Singapore was being heralded as a success *before* our social distancing came in.
3/ I wrote this piece with journalists in #Taiwan and #HongKong before #Singapore was put on a partial lockdown, which our government insists on calling a "circuit breaker". In it, we detail the good moves made to keep #COVID19 contained:…

1/ An op-ed for @washingtonpost today:…

Lawrence Wong, co-chair of the task force to tackle #COVID19, said things would have been done differently had they known things were going to turn out this way with the migrant worker dormitories.
2/ But there was no way #Singapore's government didn't know about the conditions in the dorms. NGOs like @twc2sg and @home_migrantssg have been raising this issue for *years*. Journalists like myself have been reporting on migrant worker issues, writing to the ministry for input.
3/ They also should have known about the risks of outbreaks or other diseases stemming from overcrowding and/or cleanliness and hygiene issues: NGOs and reports have flagged cases of chickenpox, dengue, zika, etc.…

⚠️@Harvard study projects recurrent wintertime #COVID19 outbreaks: “Intermittent #PhysicalDistancing may be required *into 2022* unless ICU capacity is increased substantially or a treatment or vaccine becomes available.”

#coronavirus #CoronavirusPandemic…
The #COVID19 projections are based on estimates of seasonality (worse in winter), ability to gain long-term immunity to this deadly #coronavirus (NOT likely based on other related viruses), and cross-immunity to related coronaviruses (could provide partial immunity!).
▶️Highly-effective distancing allows a strategy using #coronavirus TESTING, contact tracing and quarantine, as in #SouthKorea and #Singapore
▶️Less effective 1-time distancing may PROLONG the outbreak

But @realDonaldTrump *still* hasn’t provided the #COVID19 tests he promised.🤬

On Mar 24, we had ~800 #COVID deaths in the US. On Apr 4, when the count was at ~8,000, I predicted ~20,000 deaths by Easter Sunday, Apr 12.

My prediction was spot on. Current tally is 20,600.

In this PEDAGOGICAL thread, I will explain how I came up with this number. This thread is not meant for systems experts.

I became interested in, and very concerned about, the spread of #coronavirus since January 2020, when I saw the initial datasets from #Wuhan.

I am an applied mathematician, and I specialize in modeling dynamic systems, besides other things. I am not an epidemiologist, but the spread of infectious diseases are governed by the same mathematical rules that govern dynamical systems in general.

First off: who are these migrant workers? #Singapore has close to 1 million work permit holders, men and women. Here we're talking about male migrant workers who work on construction sites, shipyards, petrochemical refineries, etc., mostly from #India and #Bangladesh.
On 5 April, the #Singapore government first gazetted two dormitories—S11 Dormitory @ Punggol and Westlite Toh Guan dormitory—as isolation areas for 14 days. This meant that about 20,000 men were confined to their rooms. #COVID19
