Contempt proceedings against Actor & altruist Mr. @Suriya_offl is baseless. In the first place Madras High Court or any other High courts have no grounds to prosecute him, as his comments does not come under their jurisdiction. #TNStandWithSuriya /1

To protect the dignity of the courts & distinguish the smooth administration of justice, only superior courts have the power to punish a person in contempt case. Mr Suriya`s remarks are about the judgement of the apex court & it is in noway connected to Madras High Court. /2

In many contempt cases Supreme Court has remarked that criticism on the judgement must be welcomed in a civil society as long as it does not hamper the administration of the justice. Moreover his remarks does not vilify any judge of the supreme court. /3

Civil contempt involves willful disobedience of law, writ or direction. He did not disobey the direction of law or violate the judgement of the SC. Criminal contempt would involve accusation of scandalizing the court or interfering judicial proceeding or obstructing justice. /4

We can clearly reason out that his remarks in no way interferes with judicial proceeding or obstructs administration of justice. His criticism is well with in the limits of the civilized society & any action against him would only curb the idea of free marketplace of ideas. /n
