When people come on this street to heap our economic misfortune on the last 5years of @mbuhari I shudder at the deliberate and malicious intent of people to rewrite history. Many states, in the 80s were producing not only for export but also for domestic consumption. Nigeria
has had to grapple with institutional & systemic corruption pervading every facet of our business and social life. One after the other these businesses that contributed to our GDP in the 80s started leaving in droves. Shagari's team started our death dance. Car plants all closed.
With their closure all other component manufacturers(Tyres, battery, glass, car seats)had their businesses suffer a natural and painful death. With their death came massive job losses. Dunlop, Mitchelin, Thermocool closed shop after years of struggling to barely survive.
Oil with all attendant blessings killed all other sectors. The lure of quick money was too much. Nobody was interested in knowing why many of our NATIONAL BRANDS were closing shop. IBB ran multiple failed economic policies before SAP and devaluation finally broke our backs. In
his own words, he was surprised that 'Nigeria was still standing" after the multiple gangrape of the treasury. Many of the politicians that are today howling about poverty or failed government policies have either directly or through their parents brought upon us, this sad fate.
