Spending my evening watching the @CityofSSF Commission on Racial and Social Equity. As a resident of SSF and Bay Area educator, I’m VERY interested in this conversation.
So far we’ve had examples of the myth of meritocracy, allusion to flawed and racist bootstrap mentality, and perhaps an attempt at being a medal minority. 🍿
Agreements can be powerful, if we named RACE explicitly, we could:
have a common goal of ANTIRACISM,
Be open to new perspective that challenge WHITE PRIVILEGE,
And be self aware of privilege and WHITE fragility.
When we look at data disproportionalities, we have to ask ourselves, if something is wrong with our kids of color (racism) or something is wrong with our systems, metrics, and environments (antiracist)
Also, do we simply need to give our marginalized student more support and wrap around services, or remove the racist policies, curriculum, and instructional policies. It’s both and.
I appreciate that mindsets were named but we have to be clear that we are talking about implicit bias, discrimination, assimilationist, and beliefs of white supremacy.
Oh. We have work to do everywhere. Even in my city of residence. Glad I got to tune in and see what’s up. The tentacles of white supremacy are wrapped tightly around our structures and habits.
