if you've ever come near the healthcare profession you probably have had a pulse oximeter on your finger. they're brilliant devices, incredibly simple - shines a light through your skin and measures the spectral absorption to get your blood oxygen level

these are absolutely universal in medicine, have been for many decades. well what's good for the goose (humans) is good for the gander (aminal) so vets must use these. animals don't have fingertips. where do they put the probe?

i'm glad you asked. they put it absolutely anywhere they can

apparently dogs under anesthesia get it on the tongue

cats actually CAN get it on their adorable dainty paws

there is one that measures Straight Off The Bean

Tiny Rat Paw Sensor

on rats it can apparently just be clipped straight to the scruff, and this particular system has the delightful name of MouseOx Plus

mouse! thigh! sensor!

anyway, the reason I told you all of this is because I found an image of a prototype being tested on a cow, and when I sent it to @Garudina, they replied "OXimeter" and so I am looking for a new friend

it turns out the name in the research paper was Bovine Mobile Observation Operation or BMOO, so what's even more upsetting here is that this pun was better than the one from the actual scientists
