Read this thread for an outline of an #EvidencetoImpact story, 'Priority-setting exercise helps focus tobacco addiction research efforts', as we lead up to #WorldEBHCDay on 20 October @cochraneTAG @cochranecollab

In 2016 the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group (TAG) began an in-depth prioritisation project based on the @JamesLindAlliance framework to ensure that its efforts are aligned with stakeholder information needs.

TAG wanted to ensure that the voices of researchers, commissioners, funders and policymakers were heard, as well as those of healthcare providers and users.

The project commenced with an online survey, aimed at identifying stakeholders’ most pressing questions about interventions and policies for the treatment and prevention of tobacco addiction.

A second survey was sent to respondents of the first survey using the Delphi method to help refine the list of priority questions. The list of priority questions was then presented at a workshop.

The workshop was attended by members of the public, guideline developers, stop smoking advisers, clinicians and funders who helped contribute to decisions on the final list of high priority questions.

The exercise resulted in 8 priority research categories and 4 overarching priority themes, and an action plan was implemented based on the questions highlighted by its stakeholders. To date, 21 reviews have been updated and 3 new reviews have been published.

The published findings achieved impact in unanticipated ways, eg @NIHRresearch put out a large funding call across a number of its funding streams for research in areas identified by the prioritisation exercise. NIHR cited the findings as a clear driver for the initiative.
