9/23 marks the anniversary of Marcos' declaration of martial law in 1972. I was not alive at that time but I am aware of the atrocities of the Marcos family - from the torture of many dissidents to the looting of our country's wealth. 1/n

I remember my mother telling me that except for the curfew, life did not change that much for her. I could not wrap my mind around this. Was this because the commoners in the Chinese-Filipino community like her were apolitical? Or was this the case of ignorance being bliss? 2/n

Then I had a chance to learn that two of my uncles were caught violating the curfew. They served a few hours of jail time and had to face the police chief the next day. My uncle was telling me this as though it was a funny story. 3/n

So the two uncles apologized to the police chief and promised not to violate the curfew again. And then they told him that they will treat him some dimsum. I am not sure whether this dimsum thing happened but they were eventually released. 4/n

So after the storytelling, I asked my uncle (who was about 70 yo): would you want to have another government that is as authoritarian as Marcos? And he said YES! I want to roll my eyes in disbelief! He was literally locked up for violating a stupid curfew. 5/n

I guess my takeaway from this is that peoples' voting preferences are truly fascinating. But regardless,
