1/ The “dictatorship” label for #Ecuador will be justified if the Correaist candidate @ecuarauz is banned by electoral authorities as this piece suggests may happen. I do not throw that term around lightly
2/ I have not used that label to describe #Ecuador under Moreno despite the many ways he has assaulted & degraded democracy since 2017. Let’s review (as @GuillaumeLong ‘s does very well)
3/ Moreno created & HANDPICKED a body that took on constituent assembly powers to stack judiciary & electoral authorities to his liking in 2018.
4/ Moreno created a media monoculture by ensuring that public media no longer countered the oligarch serving private media. Both pursued the same vehemently anti-correaist agenda.
5/ Moreno won the presidency in 2017 as a staunch Corresist - had been Correa’s VP & used his Correaist credentials to deceive voters with incredible cynicism
6/ Moreno’s running mate -Jorge Glas -,has been in jail for years. Glas denouced that Moreno had cut a deal to rule on behalf of Ecuador’s traditional power brokers once in office
7/ Armed with compliant media, judges & other authorities, Moreno kept control of Correa’s old party AND blocked Correaists from registering a new one
8/ To compete in 2019 local elections, Correaist candidates joined an already existing party - FCS- in order to participate. That party is now banned from participating in 2021. Not hard to see why.
9/ The anti-Correa outfit Torino Economics said the 2019 results showed that a Correaist could come in 2nd in the first round of a Presidential election.
10/ Moreno has pursued Correa with trumped up criminal charges & even charged & jailed the Correaist governor of Pichincha (elected 2019)
11/ Other top Correa allies like @RicardoPatinoEC & @GabrielaEsPais have been driven into exile - pursued by claims they were inciting rebellion. Allegations that outrage western media & NGOs when made against openly insurrectionist US allies in #Venezuela
12/ Correaists have worked all these tyrannical restrictions -including the ban on FCS and on Correa running as VP- and still registered Andres Arauz as Presidential candidate
13/ If Arauz is banned there is simply no reasonable grounds for holding back on the “dictatorship” label for #Ecuador any longer. END
