Timely House Judiciary hearing happening now on protecting judicial independence.
After recognizing Justice #Ginsburg's legacy, Congressman Hank Johnson says the Senate has failed to dispassionately consider Trump's nominees to the bench.
Johnson says courts are being captured by dark money, partisan pressure, ideological litmus tests, attacks by the president, a rubber stamp Senate and a midnight judicial appointment.
Ranking member Martha Roby: "Regardless of who is president...if there is an opening on the federal judiciary the president should nominate a person for that role and the Senate should decide whether the candidate is qualified enough to be confirmed...
...so our federal courts can continue to function effectively."
Roby takes issue with Dems accusing GOP of taking over the judiciary with the hearing name "court capture."
"Just because a president whether Democratic or Republican nominates a candidate for the federal bench does not mean that they are 'capturing the courts.'"
