1. Consider signing 1 of these letters re: the rescinding of offer of employment to @ValentinaAzarov to head UofT’s International Human Rights Program. Please read thread.

2. It's reported that @ValentinaAzarov's offer of employment to head @UTLaw's #humanrights program was rescinded when Law Dean acquiesced to pressure by a Judge-donor to program cuz her scholarship recognizes Israeli settlements violate IHRL.

3.I was a student @UTLaw. I got my start in int’l HR law thru UofT’s program. I noted the program had sent students to Israel inclding to work w/ the govt but hadn’t supported anyone to work in Palestine. W/ some inst’nl struggle + the support of a courageous prof. I was the 1st.

4. When appointed UN Special Rapporteur on the right to housing, I approached @SamerMuscati then Dir of @IHRP_UofT for research support for my mandate. He was incredible as was the support of the students who worked with me over 4 years.

5. As UN Rapp, I tried to instil in students the understanding that #human rights r universal – they don't apply to 1 group + not another, they aren't parsed to determine who's deserving of them + under what conditions. They aren't suspended in conflict, austerity or pandemics.

6. It would, of course, be impossible to be an effective UN Rapporteur, accountable to the world’s nations, if my position was to privilege some people’s human rights over others. That approach undermines the meaning and content of human rights.

7. In the @UTLaw sit'n the Judge's reported interference in the hiring process, and Dean Iacobucci's reported acquiescence, undermines the #humanrights project as a whole. It is so deeply disappointing - especially from an institution where I cut my #humanrights teeth.

8. The @IHRP_UofT has played a significant role in advancing HR globally. W/out impartial investigations into both the Judge's and the Dean's behavior + repercussions for any wrongdoing found, it's impossible for the programme to continue w/ integrity.
