3. All of the newspapers covered here have shifted from digital strategies emphasising the pursuit of audience reach to a focus on building lasting relationships with readers who will pay for online content in the form of subscriptions, memberships, donations, or micropayments
4. These newspapers prioritise loyal readers over ‘fly-by’ visitors and attract them with:
-distinctive content reflecting classic functions of local journalism: crime, courts, traffic
-experimentation in long-form, data-driven & solutions-oriented reporting
💰 Their pay models
5. The newsrooms have adopted new editorial processes to enhance digital revenues including:
👀 Quantifying engagement
📚 Producing in-depth features
🎧 Developing podcasts and newsletters
👭 Collaborating across departments
🛠 Sharing content among publisher holdings
6. This has spurred changes to these outlets’ strategies. As FB has shifted its focus from public posts to private messaging, they have scaled back their reliance on the platform and instead use it to:
💰Promote subscriptions
🔗Connect with targeted groups
🖐🏼Reach new audiences
7. Follow-up interviews in August 2020 reveal that these challenges have been enhanced by #COVID19.
