Sept. 24, 2020

Six more Iowans have died from COVID-19, pushing Iowa's total to 1,299 since first death six months ago today.

Deaths were reported in Guthrie, Ida, Linn, Polk (2), and Winneshiek Counties.

The death in Ida is first COVID-19 death reported there.

With the death in Ida County, Iowans in 87 of our 99 counties have now died from COVID-19.

Hopefully, we have no more deaths, but it is already the 7th leading cause of death in Iowa for a year, on pace to be number 3 behind heart disease and cancer.

On a day when six more Iowans have died from coronavirus, hospitalizations for the disease were also up to 305, including 79 in intensive care units and 37 on ventilators.

There were 56 new admissions to Iowa hospitals for COVID-19 in the last 24-hour reporting period.

Between 10 a.m. Sept. 23 and 10 a.m. Sept. 24, there were 1,341 new cases reported, pushing Iowa's total to 83,347.

Subtracting deaths (1,299) and "recoveries" (61,466), there are 20,582 active cases in Iowa - one out of every 154 Iowans!

The 1,341 new cases were confirmed on 7,558 new reported tests (up from 750,943 to 758,501) - that's a rate of tests reported showing COVID-19 of 17.7%.

. . .

The state is scheduled to report how many Iowa kids under age 18 have now tested positive at 11 am at the "accessibility status page" at its website - as of yesterday, that number was 6,595.

That's already up 2,057 since September 1 (when it was 4,538).

. . .

Due to other commitments, I can't provide county-level data now, but I hope to provide it early this evening.

Two quick notes:

For 8 out of last 9 days, Sioux County (pop. 35,000) had more new cases (58) than Story (34) and Johnson (42).

Dubuque had 142 new cases reported.

More later.

Please mourn the dead, support loved ones and caregivers, and help stop the spread of this deadly infectious disease.

Still don't have time for county data, but Iowa has reported another 172 kids under age 18 have tested positive, pushing total to 6,767.

That's up 2,229 just since Sept. 1, when total stood at 4,538.

If this keeps up through April, over 20,000 more kids will test positive!

Here's a thread with today's county-by-county data. Later tonight, I'm planning a report on week (Sept. 17-24) with cases, cases per capita, and rate of tests reported showing COVID-19.

Clearly, Gov. Reynolds and Iowans need to do more to stop spread.
