This week we celebrated the release of Cindy Erazo, an El Salvador woman who was unjustly imprisoned for six years after suffering an obstetric emergency. #EsJustoLiberalasSV

Cindy suffered a stillbirth in 2014. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the alleged crime of aggravated homicide. #EsJustoLiberalasSV

Due to El Salvador’s total abortion ban, women are unjustly criminalized in situations including obstetric emergencies, when their lives are at risk, or when the pregnancy is the result of sexual assault. #EsJustoLiberalasSV

Cindy is free today—but 18 other women who experienced similar obstetric emergencies remain detained in inhumane conditions during the #COVID19 pandemic. #EsJustoLiberalasSV

Cindy’s release is a result of the tireless efforts of many human rights defenders fighting to protect abortion as a right. And this month, @ONUHumanRights has urged El Salvador to free all the women unjustly imprisoned. #EsJustoLiberalasSV

Just like Cindy, these women suffered obstetric emergencies and should have been released long ago. Their situations have worsened due to the pandemic, and it’s time they're granted the freedom they deserve. #EsJustoLiberalasSV
