Loving these just-so conversion stories except instead of ex-Christians or ex-Muslims it’s ex-Trump supporters. (And of course believers in the destination religion—liberalism—are lapping it up.)
If you want to make it in Hollywood you need a conversion story where you go from some kind of traditional way of life to enlightened liberalism. Every meeting I’ve taken in NYC or LA has insisted that be my story. When they found out it wasn’t they lost interest immediately.
Every Christian has to talk about how their parents are bigots but then they met a gay friend, every Muslim has to do a bit where their traditional parents are so embarrassing but then they...met a gay guy. There’s a universally required conversion story to liberalism.
What you can NEVER do is suggest that you (and therefore HISTORY) may be moving on a different trajectory, rejecting liberalism and becoming more traditional. This is simply impossible, a sign of madness.
But the worst thing you can do is suggest that liberalism’s story of itself is false, that liberalism is not The Narrative but a brief heretical divergence in the larger story of Christendom. Simply unthinkable.
This isn’t about people who voted for X but are now voting for Y, which happens a lot and isn’t newsworthy. This is about the grift available for those willing to confirm the story that liberals tells themselves about history, and the struggle that awaits those who reject it.
