Being pro-life is horrifying. It confronts us with a reality more brutal than we like to think. If life begins at conception then we and our loved ones are capable of grave evil, and we find ourselves faced with the challenge of living in a violent world with gentleness, love, and forgiveness.
I understand the reaction that it just can’t be true. How could anyone live with that? This is how I feel about vegetarianism. The arguments are compelling, but if it’s true, l have to change my life. Not just my behavior, but my willingness to live in a world of mass injustice without resorting to violence to change it.

The best thing about the rosary is that it *not* a way to pray to God but the self-negation of any such technique. The point of the physical object 📿 isn’t to do it right (because there’s no such thing) but so your mind isn’t occupied trying to remember where you are or what you’ve said because you can’t mess up. Not like your prayer can fail and then God doesn’t get the message.

Trump made big gains with Muslims, jumping from 15% in 2016 to 35% in 2020. One big reason is that compared to 4 years ago Republicans have been pretty quiet about Islam this year. It’s possible that the further we get from the War on Terror mindset the more Muslims may move back into the GOP, which they only fled in 2003.

In my experience, conservatives can usually describe what liberals believe in a way that liberals would accept. Liberals, on the other hand, have absolutely no idea why anyone would be conservative besides being evil. This is why liberals exist in a state of chronic surprise. The ability to make a positive case for your opponents is important for many reasons. The first is that you will never be able to persuade others unless you know what makes them tick. Calling Hispanics who voted for Trump self-loathing won’t cut it.

No matter what happens today just remember that God is in control and he can always make things worse. You: Hurray! My candidate won!

God: I want you to build a giant ark.

Update: The man who shot the Orthodox priest in France yesterday was *not* Muslim. He was another Orthodox priest. Dispute was personal. leparisien.fr/faits-divers/p… Fun Fact: The alleged shooter was also a member of a far-right party. So either the reports of him yelling “Allahu Akbar” were bullshit or he just got confused and thought he was Muslim for a second. Image

Unpopular Opinion: Conservatives shouldn’t hold Barrett up as an example of how anyone can raise 7 kids and have a wildly successful career. Women who can do that are obviously exceptional, which is fine because you want exceptional people on the Supreme Court. I understand the impulse to point to her and be like “See? There’s no reason to have an abortion!” But for most people (who either aren’t rich or don’t have extended family to help) raising kids does cause your career to suffer. But it’s worth it!

Last election everyone argued about Islam. This year it’s Catholicism. What’s next? Hinduism? Atheism? Will Zoroastrianism finally make a comeback? Tune in to 2024 to find out! I’m being silly but it’s interesting that Islam and Muslim immigration was THE TOPIC of Trump’s 2016 campaign and I haven’t heard anything this year. Why is that? Is it because of his peace deals in the Middle East?

I have no problem with Democrats asking Barrett how she understands the relationship between her work and Catholicism. It’s a good question and I think she’d give a terrific answer that would be instructive to all of us trying to figure out how our faith relates to our work. Obviously there are ways of “asking” that are just bad faith smears and innuendo, but I really would love to hear her discuss faith, reason, the common good, etc.

Loving these just-so conversion stories except instead of ex-Christians or ex-Muslims it’s ex-Trump supporters. (And of course believers in the destination religion—liberalism—are lapping it up.) If you want to make it in Hollywood you need a conversion story where you go from some kind of traditional way of life to enlightened liberalism. Every meeting I’ve taken in NYC or LA has insisted that be my story. When they found out it wasn’t they lost interest immediately.

Liberals freaking out about Barrett tend to think of Catholicism as a fideistic religion, as if we submit to some irrational authority who tells us to believe certain doctrines and then we reason from that. That understanding has been condemned by the Church many times. The fear is that Barret would be using normal human reasoning about the law and then at a certain point her ~Catholicism~ would get activated and she’d insert some alien precept into jurisprudence. This is not how Catholicism works.

"some of my best politicians are Catholic" This is the same way people talk about Muslims. "I'm not Islamophobic, I love Muslims who are indistinguishable from non-Muslims. I just don't like it when they [insert wildly inaccurate understanding of Islam]"

Interesting to see child abuse emerge as a common element in these bizarre stories of white women pretending to be black. I’m calling it Racial Munchausen’s. blackindylive.com/shocking-detai… People with Munchausen’s pretend to be sick to get attention. Racial Munchausen’s is when someone pretends to be another race to receive vicarious support and dissociate from the race of their familial abusers.
