ABOUT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Hypertension or high BP is when your blood pressure rises to harmful levels.

It's the No. 1 risk for death worldwide & a major cause of heart attack! Do something about your BP before it's too late.

When you check your BP, you usually have two numbers;

1. The upper number (Systolic BP) &
2. The lower number (Diastolic BP)

For example, you can have a reading like 120/80 mmHg

Both are very important, take note!

There are 5 blood pressure categories as you can see in this chart.

Whenever you check your BP, crosscheck it on this chart to know if it is;

- normal
- elevated
- stage 1 hypertension
- stage 2 hypertension, or
- hypertensive crisis

Based on causes, there are 2 types of hypertension;

1. Primary: Has no known cause but may be linked to bad family genes, lack of exercise, bad diet, etc.

2. Secondary: Due to known causes like kidney disease, thyroid problems, etc.

Here are 5 important symptoms of high BP you shouldn't forget;

1.Headache
2.Nosebleeds
3.Feeling dizzy
4.Chest pain
5.Shortness of breath

Some folks with high BP have no symptoms, except they've developed COMPLICATIONS

What things can increase your risk of having High BP?

🔹Being above 65 years
🔸Stress
🔹Being black
🔸Being too fat
🔹Family History
🔸Not being physically active
🔹Smoking

If I have high BP what can it lead to?

* Stroke
* Heart failure
* Heart attack
* Narrowed/thickened blood vessels in your eyes (causing gradual loss of sight) & kidneys (causing kidney failure)

So what should you do?

✅ If you're 18 years & above, check your BP at least once every 2years starting at age 18.

✅ If you're 40 years & above or you're 18-39 years with a high risk of hypertension, check your BP at least once every year.

1 Eat foods with less salt, more fruits & veggies
2 Exercise often
3 Take your BP drugs
4 Reduce stress
5 Have enough sleep
6 Don't smoke
7 Limit alcohol
8 Have a home BP monitor
9 Check your BP often
10 Have a doctor & discuss any concerns

What to do to reduce your chances of having high BP

1. Bring your weight within normal range
2. Don't smoke 🚭
3. Reduce alcohol
4. Eat plenty of fruits & vegetables
5. Stop panicking
6. Do exercise often
