I'm *really* excited about the next session on my list: Applying Accessibility and Gender Sensitive Design Strategy to API Design with Anwesha Bhattacharjee.

I tend to think of Accessibility == UX so it will be great to see a take on service build out.

Dr. Anwesha reiterates my original take: this isn't just about UX. She's a Product Manager at Hopper and formerly a data scientist.

This session is geared towards folks in B2B, a product manager/designer role familiar with Design Thinking or are building out a public facing API catalog.

My take: probably pretty important for internal API creation too!

Think about the core purpose of the API and how it aligns to your buyers which may be e-commerce platforms.

At the end of the day though - your users are not the buyers... they're the developers.

The needs of the developer-users will be dictated by the company they work for - they may prioritize speed, parallelization or potentially compatability with legacy systems. E-commerce devs will need different things than Travel Company Devs and POS app Devs.

Challenges abound with developing APIs given the diverse user-base. Some of these needs could be technical and some could be related to how data is served.

Dr. Anwesha suggests first identifying (with the help of stakeholders) what the API doesn't do.

The next challenge to address is what should the API do... that hasn't been called out by your users yet. Journey Mapping can help in this regard.

One of the final user concerns to address is how to differentiate in the API Economy and out-do the competition.

Prior to release it's important to gather user feedback. Utilizing a feasibility-impact matrix is one way to get meaningful info from these sessions.

This helps customers understand their needs are being recognized and ensures a robust backlog.

We're about 18m in to the presentation and we're just touching on accessibility and gender in API design. Basically - make sure to include developers of a diverse background in your stakeholder group to evaluate the API to ensure you're meeting their needs.

And the wrap-up slide of 4 key points of API Product management.

Tom's take: I feel like this session was mid-advertised. Was much more API Product Management 101 than a deep dive into Accessibility and Gender considerations for API design.
