#Facebook own Oversight Board was announced 13mths ago but is yet to meet.
FBoversight, set up by academics, journalists, former FB employees & activists just weeks ago, met for the first time yesterday
And it's already claiming its first victory

The group was formed by @carolecadwalla because the actual Oversight Board was not going to deal with any #Election2020 issues — and the group felt this was a dangerous failing.

“We're talking about the fate of democracy in the largest democracy in the world. Through his action or inaction [Zuckerberg] allows American democracy to be destroyed. It is the last chance for him to get this right," @Moonalice, an early FB investor.

The group has three key demands:
• Ban ads that seek to delegitimize the US election
• FB must enforce its own policies and remove posts inciting violence
•Only allow posts about presidential election results once a candidate is declared winner

But getting FB to listen is not easy:
“We have not seen this level of deafness from a corporate entity who served society,” @DerrickNAACP said. “They have refused to address basic issues of keeping people safe and protecting our democracy."

If this was any other company, they would be out of business @JGreenblattADL said:
“Facebook should do what every other company in American business history does when your product doesn't work and it kills people. You take it down and you fix it."

But @shoshanazuboff says FB is losing public trust & that could finally force it to change.
"The American public has entirely lost faith with this corporation. 70% say Zuckerberg has too much power. 79% want Facebook to do more to protect democracy."

In the end @rashadrobinson says it's up to everyone to force Facebook to change.
“History will not only look unkindly on Facebook, but it will look unkindly on all of those who knew better and did not do better."
