National Webinar "Swachhata Ke 6 Saal: Bemisaal" held yesterday on Bapu's 151st birth anniversary threw up a treasure-trove of learnings in sanitation & waste management from across India.

We have focused/ need to focus on 3R: Reduce, Reuse & Recycle leading to less load on cities to process the waste & improve sustainability.
Segregation at source is the key to sustainable waste management.

Home composting & compulsory treatment of wet waste by Bulk Generators reduces the load significantly. Decentralised composting helps further in getting rid of huge land-fills in rural/ peri-urban areas.

Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) are Wealth Centres for extracting the real value of the dry wastes. Culturally-sensitive terminology such as 'Saptapadi' have been used by Cities/ States innovatively to capture the people's minds.

The spirit of healthy competition has indeed pervaded every city of India & different groups of people have joined the movement to make it bigger, better & stronger. Our citizens are the real stakeholders of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The word 'Bemisaal' or outstanding is but an understatement for the performance of our cities who have outdone each other in the last 6 years & have continually set new standards of Swachhata for themselves and others.

In fact, if someone assess the developments around #Swachhata in future, it will be difficult to believe the phenomenal work done in short period of 6 years.

If these successes were not there in response to Hon’ble PM’s clarion call to make the nation Swachh, possibly Covid-19 would have spurred a much bigger disaster through spinning off various other diseases.

I am confident that urban India will move with greater vigour to become Swachh, Swasth, Sashakt, Sampann & Atmanirbhar.

I urge all to be safe in current age of Covid-19 by spreading the message & observing wearing of face masks properly in groups.

Everyone should maintain physical distancing of 2 yards & regularly handwash/ sanitise especially during the upcoming festive season.
