LEGEND of KAMAKHYA DEVI & NARAKASURA
Accoding to Kalika Purana Narakasura was the noted demon king of Pragjotisha-Kamarupa.His mother had granted a boon from Vishnu that he would be all powerful & hv long life.Naraka was generous but with association with Demon Banasur
He became evil.
Once Devi Kamakhya appeared before Naraka in person.
Naraka got attracted by the beauty of Devi & motivated by his desired he wanted to marry Devi Kamakhya.
When he proposed her in his arrogance, Devi Kamakya put a condition that he should construct a
Stone path
from the foot hill to the temple in one night.Confidence Narakasura agreed with this & started the work.
He was about to complete the path devi order a cock & made it crow giving the indication of dawn. Narakasur left the work.Later when he came to know abt the trick & cased the
cock & k!!led it.
The place is known as Kukurakata now & the incomplete staircase is known as Mekhelauja path.
Even today these staircase r used by some devotees. As per their faith,when someone's wish is fulfilled in the temple,next time they visit the temple using this steps.
