When laying down the shadows, don't worry if the paint runs together a little. That can help make your painting look coherent. Just make sure your light layers are dry before adding the shadow.

there's always as stretch of time in the middle of every painting where it looks awful. Don't rush it. Just lay down your shapes and colors. It will all come together in the final layers when you are putting in the highlights and feeling great!
I use this method for digital painting too.
