41 D.C. (Divine Calendar): in this memorable year, the dragon god Zalama came out with a handy invention called Wish Orbs, a set of seven planet-sized spheres that, once assembled, would summon a dragon to grant any wish. Hence their alternate name: Dragon Balls. #HistoryofEver

Due to their great size, this original set of DBs are usually referred to as “Super Dragon Balls”, and the divine dragon (Shenlong) they produce is likewise called “Super Shenlong”. They are normally spread throughout U6 and U7 and must be addressed in the divine language.

42 DC: Zalama trademarks the DB’s distinctive red star pattern. How this “Divine Calendar” fits into the overall timeline is unknown, but the name implies it’s used by the gods, and Year 41/42 (rather than 100 Zillion) in turn implies these events were early on in divine history.

Zalama being a “dragon god” with no clear connection to the current god hierarchy might also be significant. Perhaps Zalama predates the system of Zeno/angels/Kaioshin/Hakaishin? In which case, the creation of the Super DBs might be the earliest event described in the series.

So far Zalama has only been mentioned by Zuno, and is presumably different from the golden dragon summoned by the Super DBs, who is only ever called “Super Shenlong.” But who/what the heck Zalama is remains (of course) unknown.

If Zalama and Super Shenlong are the same though, that would mean he created the Super DBs as a way for people to summon him, making them essentially a big cellphone. I leave it to you to draw the connection between the Namekians and One Piece’s Snail-o-Phones.

On Monday: it’s my way or the snake way.
