BACK IN SESSION: Without any formal explanation of yesterday's abrupt end, #DerekChauvinTrial is back in session. LAPD Sgt Jody Stiger resumes his testimony. If looking for a quick listen, I joined NPR's Up First podcast early this AM to discuss the case.

Prosecutor Steve Schleicher having Sgt. Jody Stiger walk the jury thru video screenshots of #DerekChauvin knee on #GeorgeFloyd neck area. Says knee positioning did NOT change during the full 9 minute & 29 seconds of the restraint even after the ambulance arrived. @FOX9
Sgt. Stiger points out a "pain compliance technique" where officers squeeze a subject's hand to get compliance as #DerekChauvin is seemingly captured here with a handcuffed & prone #GeorgeFloyd. #DerekChauvinTrial
Meant to share this MPD graphic yesterday depicting the departments use of force matrix as it relates to the resistance of a subject. Sgt Stiger concludes "No force should have been used" once #GeorgeFloyd is prone, handcuffed on the ground. #DerekChauvinTrial
Schleicher just asked Sgt Stiger about crowd of bystanders? Hostile? No. Throwing bottles, attacking officers? No. Sgt Stiger says he did not consider this crowd to be a threat, explaining they were filming what was happening & expressing their concerns for #GeorgeFloyd
MOMENTS AGO: State use of force expert, LAPD Sgt Jody Stiger talking about the deadly risks of positional asphyxia. Eric Nelson has now begun his cross examination. #GeorgeFloyd #DerekChauvinTrial @FOX9
On cross exam, Eric Nelson gets Sgt Stiger to acknowledge, based on information Derek Chauvin had from radio dispatch & his initial observations of a resisting #GeorgeFloyd, a reasonable officer would have been allowed to deploy a taser under the circumstances. #DerekChauvinTrial
Defense just played short clip from police body cam footage while officers are on top of #GeorgeFloyd. It's hard to make out what Floyd is saying. Nelson asked Sgt. Stiger if he hears Floyd say, "I ate too many drugs." Sgt. Stiger responds he cannot make it out. Nelson moves on.
After approximately 90 minutes of steady expert witness testimony from LAPD Sgt Jody Stiger, Judge Peter Cahill calls for the 20-minute AM break. We are in recess until 11:05am central time. #GeorgeFloyd #DerekChauvinTrial @FOX9
Courtroom pool reporter: "Practically all jurors taking notes when viewing pix of Chauvin applying pain inducing hold to Floyd’s hand"
Additionally, full jury said to be looking "attentively at pix of bystanders" during testimony abt how threatening crowd may have been for police
ICYMI: Here's the cross examination Q & A between defense atty Nelson & use of force expert LAPD Sgt Jodi Stiger. Do you hear #GeorgeFloyd say, "I ate too many drugs"? #DerekChauvinTrial @FOX9
Sgt Stiger's expert testimony is complete. State calls its next witness. Special Agent James Reyerson of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. He was the lead investigator on the case. #DerekChauvinTrial #GeorgeFloyd
SA James Reyerson is a former NYC cop, now w/ BCA. He takes state's case in new direction. Again, BCA is investigative agency on deadly use of force incident. So think crime scene, evidence, statements of cops, etc. Their file then turned over to prosecutors for charging decision
Sgt Reyerson snapped this photo of defendant #DerekChauvin after the deadly arrest incident. He testified that Chauvin weighed 140 pounds. And his equipment weighed somewhere between 30 & 40 pounds. #DerekChauvinTrial
After a quick sidebar, Judge Cahill decides to call the lunch recess during Sgt Reyerson's direct examination. Judge asks jurors to reconvene at 1:15pm central. #DerekChauvinTrial #GeorgeFloyd @FOX9
KEY COURTROOM MOMENT: State use of force expert Los Angeles Police Sergeant Jodi Stiger: "No force should have been used once he was in that position." #GeorgeFloyd #DerekChauvinTrial @FOX9
COURT RESUMES: Special Agent James Reyerson, lead BCA case investigator now detailing the various pieces of evidence including the two $20 bills recovered at Cup Foods, East 38th Street & Chicago Avenue. #DerekChauvinTrial #GeorgeFloyd @FOX9
Prosecution walking BCA Special Agent Reyerson thru little 10-second clips of body camera footage & Darnella Frazier bystander video to show how long #DerekChauvin kept knee on #GeorgeFloyd neck and back beyond moments where Floyd stops speaking & eventually stops moving.
