Thread:
Public access to professional teams' training sessions is rarely granted, yet today Chelsea live-streamed one of the world's best coaches' final #UCLFinal preparations.
Below I will go through every module and give a bit of insight into Tuchel's methodology.
MODULE 1: Activation
1' run around the pitch at jogging speed.
Purpose: warm muscles to increase stretch.
2'30" static stretching in circle formation.
Static stretching is usually performed when closing the session in order to cool the muscles down. Chelsea's staff let their players do it too before the eventual DYNAMIC WARM-UP comes into play:
MODULE 1: Activation
5'30" circuit warm-up and goalkeeper activation.
Circuit warm-ups keep every player moving and don't really serve a higher purpose other than dynamically preparing the muscle groups.
MODULE 2: Rondo
After a 30" break, players prepare for two separate 9v2 rondo exercises of 6'.
Low intensity with focus on physically growing into the session. Little tactical emphasis is on playing wall passes to split the pressers by a third man combination.
MODULE 3: Positional game
3'30" Break leads players into a pentagon-shaped playing field for an 8v6+7 (+1) position game.
Pink players replace white players after 7'30" and finish after 2'30".
Seven sidelines create new angles for players to get used to and facilitate playing with four on matchday. Compare it to Stephen Curry dribbling with two balls.
+1 cameleon joins team in possession to emphasise its advantages, as La Masia have always done.
The seven players on the outside always play the ball facing "back to goal" to simulate and train 1-2 or third man combination play.
MODULE 4: Game GK+6/7+GK +8 (+1)
1'15" Break with tactical instructions before an 12' game.
"Wall players" on either side of the goal and each byline of the hexagon pitch.
Blue, pink & white switch every 4'.
Tuchel likes to build on his tactical principles through his modules, which is called "progression" in didactic terms.
Again, the "cameleon" appears to help the team in P+. Wall players on the sides too simulate combination play and naturally train inch-perfect movement.
MODULE 5: Shooting exercise
A 7' minute shooting drill rounds off the training session after a 2' break.
Players divided in two rows combine a 1-2 with the coach, take one touch to inside and shoot.
After 3'30" players take the touch inside, changing their shooting leg.
Goalkeepers rotate every shot.
ENDING:
Chelsea's only activation day training finishes after 45' of action, with the primary focus on muscle preparation and tactical habits.
Added is a usual 5-day cycle preparation scheme.
