Public access to professional teams' training sessions is rarely granted, yet today Chelsea live-streamed one of the world's best coaches' final #UCLFinal preparations.

Below I will go through every module and give a bit of insight into Tuchel's methodology.
MODULE 1: Activation

1' run around the pitch at jogging speed.
Purpose: warm muscles to increase stretch.

2'30" static stretching in circle formation.
Static stretching is usually performed when closing the session in order to cool the muscles down. Chelsea's staff let their players do it too before the eventual DYNAMIC WARM-UP comes into play:
MODULE 1: Activation

5'30" circuit warm-up and goalkeeper activation.

Circuit warm-ups keep every player moving and don't really serve a higher purpose other than dynamically preparing the muscle groups.
MODULE 2: Rondo

After a 30" break, players prepare for two separate 9v2 rondo exercises of 6'.

Low intensity with focus on physically growing into the session. Little tactical emphasis is on playing wall passes to split the pressers by a third man combination.
MODULE 3: Positional game

3'30" Break leads players into a pentagon-shaped playing field for an 8v6+7 (+1) position game.

Pink players replace white players after 7'30" and finish after 2'30".
Seven sidelines create new angles for players to get used to and facilitate playing with four on matchday. Compare it to Stephen Curry dribbling with two balls.

+1 cameleon joins team in possession to emphasise its advantages, as La Masia have always done.
The seven players on the outside always play the ball facing "back to goal" to simulate and train 1-2 or third man combination play.
MODULE 4: Game GK+6/7+GK +8 (+1)

1'15" Break with tactical instructions before an 12' game.

"Wall players" on either side of the goal and each byline of the hexagon pitch.

Blue, pink & white switch every 4'.
Tuchel likes to build on his tactical principles through his modules, which is called "progression" in didactic terms.

Again, the "cameleon" appears to help the team in P+. Wall players on the sides too simulate combination play and naturally train inch-perfect movement.
MODULE 5: Shooting exercise

A 7' minute shooting drill rounds off the training session after a 2' break.
Players divided in two rows combine a 1-2 with the coach, take one touch to inside and shoot.

After 3'30" players take the touch inside, changing their shooting leg.

Goalkeepers rotate every shot.
ENDING:

Chelsea's only activation day training finishes after 45' of action, with the primary focus on muscle preparation and tactical habits.

Added is a usual 5-day cycle preparation scheme.

Tactics are the transfer of coach-to-player knowledge to inform decision-making on the pitch.
Technique is the sport-specific execution of a skill, and ball mastery in general.
Physique is the athletic dimension of the game in speed, strength and endurance.

Liverpool's defensive set-up on wide free-kick

•Expecting inswinger towards far post: staggering first bank + Van Dijk back post
•Zonal defending of 6-yard box and blocking of 3 runners ImageImage
Collective issues within this set-up:

Wary of a Modric shot or far-post cross, Liverpool overload the far post zonally and bring their bank close to their GK.

The central zone is completely undefended, and their full-backs are on opposite sides - a negative for their counters. Image
Individual issues in the set-up:

#43 and #18's body shape is close enough to 45° - they can see the ball, their opponent and can move to block. TAA's body shape is all over the place. He does not see the ball, and can only block Militao if he moves to the far post. ImageImage

This pressing shape can work - but it requires more communication than usual.

A sub-principle of our press is for the CBs to "step out" of their line and follow the striker when they drop (we have done this since pre-season).
To have the ball-near CB engage the CF when dropping, you need to have the ball on that side.

United usually force this by having their wingers curve their press runs from "out-to-in". It forces the ball inside, where the midfield is compact and the CB can step out.
Leicester picked up on a weakness in this shape.

If the winger (LW in this case) doesn't screen the pass from CB➡️RB well, it allows the opposition down the outside.
As @TalkinTactics points out, the FB following the opposition FB causes problems when play is built outside.

THREAD: Analysis of Manchester United's gameplan versus Leicester City and the half-time changes made by Erik ten Hag and his analysts that won the game:
TEAM SELECTION:

• Martinez-Lindelof CB partnership (ball progression + carrying + high line)
• Fred-Sabitzer-Weghorst midfield (intensity + long ball target)
• Rashford #9 (scoring threat and creation of depth)
• Weghorst #10 (long ball target + hold-up play)
FIRST HALF:

In the words of Erik ten Hag, a rubbish half, which entailed plenty of individual, group-related and collective mistakes on the technical and tactical levels.

I'll delve into the many mistakes of the 1st half before explaining the in-game changes that fixed them.

(Long) Thread: Analysis of every goal conceded by Manchester United in the 2022/23 season.

I'm going to pick apart every detail of the goals #MUFC concede below. I will try to offer my insight and highlight/sample systemic faults on a team-tactical or individual level.
Some considerations before we dig deeper:
-My aim is to deliver my insight into what happens and for what reason
-My aim is not to single out players positively or negatively
-The process of analysis is one where POVs come together to find a solution - feel free to argue!
1) #BHA (H) 29'19"

The goal starts from United's goal-kick. De Gea signals Maguire to open the pitch but then opts for the long ball - which doesn't follow Ten Hag's principles as Maguire is open to progress down the right.
