The residence of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi was located at 1, Safdarjung Road. Post her assassination in office the official Prime Minister's house was turned into the ‘Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum’

10, Janpath, a public-owned house was the official residence of Rajiv Gandhi although he lived at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. Post his assassination in 1991, 10, Janpath remains the residence of his widow Sonia Gandhi, the President of Congress party.

It was important to build a permanent, fixed place of residence for the Indian govt's head.
