Day 2 of our #ASPIConference2021 opens with Dr Beatrice Gorawantschy @KASonline leading a discussion on the perspectives of 🇦🇺's friends & partners on security in the Indo-Pacific region. Joining the panel is @BSantipitaks, @MGlauser5 & @annettecanberra

.@BSantipitaks comments on the central role of ASEAN in the regional architecture.

She highlights the facilitation of positive engagement, the ability to constructively engage major powers & support for the rules-based order

On ‘building trust & confidence’ in ASEAN, @BSantipitaks notes ‘there is room for all to play constructively’ and to support joint ASEAN efforts & objectives, including:

Economic cooperation, maritime connectivity, addressing cross-border threats & engaging in dialogue

.@BSantipitaks comments that non-traditional threats such as competition on technology, 5G shouldn't be overlooked. She notes that it is vital for middle-size and small countries work and collaborate together

On Canada & Australia's relationship, @MGlauser5 observes the similarities of our two countries. These include a shared Pacific border, economic patterns and, an important strategic partnership with the US

.@MGlauser5 emphasises Canada’s status as a Pacific nation and its vested interests in the region, not only relating to prosperity but also security.

‘We’re a Pacific nation... We’re part of the regional conversation, and have been for a long time'

Noting Australia and New Zealand’s shared interest in supporting our Pacific neighbours, @annettecanberra warns against acting in a ‘paternalistic’ manner, and emphasises the importance of tactful, respectful and supportive diplomacy

This high calibre diplomacy is essential for Australia and New Zealand in the Pacific, as it is what sets us apart from other actors.

‘We can’t outbid bags of cash in the Pacific; we’ve gotta work in a different way' @annettecanberra

.@annettecanberra comments that ‘trust’ in the political and institutional level is key to the success of our relationship. 🇦🇺 and 🇳🇿 must not be alone in the region
