🚨TRAVEL THREAD🚨 I’m driving from Los Angeles to Massachusetts, about 3200 miles (5150km), and will be sharing my journey here in one gigantic thread.
—June 12, 2021 4:52AM trip begins—
I deleted my original tweet announcing this trip because I wrote the wrong date in the tweet and that typo would’ve cast a dark shadow over this adventure
first stop is to pick up my co-pilot. I’m pretty sure he’s going to sleep through 90% of this trip so set up the truck accordingly
sleep set up detail
Dr Stanley Pool (candices dad) will be joining me on this long drive. He wanted to start the trip by going to sleep
like a baby
Sun’s up ☀️ 6:04 AM
unscheduled relief stop. 4 miles outside of Barstow. Stanley woke briefly but quickly resumed his sleeping
✌️
the time is 7:20AM. Stanley has been sleeping for exactly 2 hours now
Refuel #1. border of CA/NV.
oh shit, I love a party urinal. positively NOT a shy guy
this is fucking lit 🔥
really looking forward to an electric truck. 👀 @Rivian @Tesla @FordTrucks
how is he sleeping through me opening and closing the doors??
Update: STANLEY IS DOING GREAT. just a little tired
Goodbye California, hello Nevada 👋
if Stanley was awake he’d be in this picture
Terribles got 96 pumps. no waiting
rock sculptures.. if little Franny was here she’d be so into this (wife and kids traveling by plane)
Vegas!! also Stanley woke up asking ‘how the hell did we get to Vegas so fast?’ (it took us 4 hours)
Stanley and Granny staring deep into one another’s soul.
look who’s ready to ride shotgun!
what’s good Arizona
I guess we don’t get much Arizona on this trip. hi Utah 👋
it’s nice having someone up front. We did though agree to a 80/20 talk/no talk ratio. 80% of our driving will have zero talking (we have 60 hours of history pod casts teed up) and the other 20% of our time will be spent discussing those podcasts. no other topics will be spoken on
LFG
lil nap
SNOW!! (also I’m awake from my nap) also SNOW!!
with Stanley confidently behind the wheel I’m taking a little me time playing some Super Mario World on the tiniest SNES ever made
well. Stanley neglected to pay much attention to the fuel situation and I was busy playing Nintendo and we’re now down to our last 43miles and there does not seem to be a gas station anywhere within 43 miles. standby
⛽️ update; not looking promising
NO SERVICES
we are so fucked
I don’t see why he finds this so hysterical.
keeping it in neutral on the downhills. exactly zero signs of civilization on the horizon
AC is off, car is coasting. still no sign of gas station.
ITS A GOOD GOD DAMN MIRACLE
‘that was fucking close’
it’s a 24 gallon tank. we had .229 gallons left @ 14mpg. So we coulda made it another 3 miles.
this blunt force weapon is called a ‘tire buddy’
WELCOME TO COLORFUL COLORADO
CO ❤️
Almost reversed off this ledge. The Landy woulda rolled all the way down the hill.. not in a fun way
another refuel, at a gas station with a rather unfortunate name
beautiful Colorado. also tying down a mattress is something that should be done with precision and care.
I call this photo series ‘Stanley visits Aspen’
🚙XCOUNTRY ROAD TRIP DAY 2🚙
little 6am Aspen run. altitude has me huffing and puffing
so long W hotel 👋
truck is configured, ready for more miles.
Stanley is very excited about this mountain pass
sketchy af. I mean it’s insanely beautiful and we appreciate every second of this experience but cars come whipping around this single lane mountain pass going 40 it’s madness x
he won’t stop talking about the snow. this is there most excited I’ve seen him on this trip.
he’s like hysterical about the snow
he insisted we pull over
‘it’s been years since I’ve seen snow’
Independence Pass.
elevation 12,095
she said I have to call her 10 times a day. no joke
so special
we both agreed not to eat fast food
we both agreed not to eat fast food continued..
success
Stanley just spilled his Wendy’s coffee all over the car. he said he accidentally threw away the lid
I got him a new lid. He’s being extra cautious and assured me there will no future spills
I do NOT condone unsafe driving. I was asleep in the back and woke up because it felt like we were going too fast. Dr Pool has the cruise control set to 100. We had a safety discussion and he is now observing all posted speed limits
👍
malkovich malkovich
this is the only food my parents fed me until I was 15 years old. very special recipe
i bought one of these
this part of the world 😍
Stanley is researching where to sleep tonight
🚗 XCOUNTRY ROAD TRIP DAY 3🚗
that’s the Mississippi River right there
PANCAKE MACHINE!!
good morning doctor
Stanley made a friend!
not trying to start a big fight or anything but state signs were way better in the west.
fresh ice 🧊
my secret fantasy is not having to stop for gas every 90 minutes
you look great chicago 😘
despite the triple redundancy with the gps we just missed a turn for the first time on this trip. Gonna cost us about 20 minutes. Lesson learned
hey Indiana, how am I supposed to get a picture of me and the old man in front of your welcome sign if you put it 20 feet above a busy freeway ?
he got Popeyes and I’m happy for him but I am concerned about those fried chicken hands
traveling east
Ohio’s welcome sign had cones blocking it off entirely from my side of the hiway. How is anyone supposed to immortalize their road trips if shit like this happens in so many states ?
dinner with great friends in Cleveland
Cleveland is a great city
🛻 XCOUNTRY ROAD TRIP DAY 4🛻
some honesty; last night we had plans to drive til morning but at 1am (after finishing my 9th RedBull) we were on a dark hiway and there was a heavy mist. i kept seeing shadow people so Stanley drove but I saw more shadow people. so We stopped
Had a great sleep. Not sure where we are
the Land Rover has performed really well so far. Fuel economy sucks but other than that it’s been perfect
we are in Pennsylvania
Stanley is fired up
we are going to skip the hotel breakfast offerings in pursuit of something greater
Stanley’s favorite breakfast
rear view mirror camera is a rad feature
reminds me of being a kid
Stanley’s feet
is that sign from the intro to The Office actually located in Scranton? Should I go find it?!
my home state
father and father-in-law lunch at my all time favorite restaurant
my dad shortly after a sitting in my seat to ‘imagine driving three thousand miles’
so long Barry. thanks for dinner
New England summer
last night.. continued. made it to the great state of Rhode Island just before dark. nice signage ri, we both appreciate it.
last night.. continued 2. giant doorknob. this thing has captured my imagination since I was little. imagine how big the hand must be to open that doorknob? what does it open???
Last night continued part 3. great rainbow 🌈 at the Walmart parking lot.
last night continued park 4. Candice gave us a monster shopping list for the beach house so we are filling up the car. Packing the bed away meant freeing up a significant amount of cubic footage. was sad to see the bed set up go tho, end of a special part of this trip
this was one of three carts
END OF DAY 4.
that signs says MASSACHUSETTS
🛳 XCOUNTRY ROAD TRIP DAY 5🛳
lasts nights hotel was truly regretful. ‘whatever’s cheapest’ is always a bad idea when it comes to places to stay. my room smelled really bad. Stanley’s smelled worse
I didn’t buy a ticket to transport the truck to the island so I’m just leaving it here and when they find space they ship it over. you gotta put a lot of faith into an old school system like this but it always seems to work out. so long vehicle, you have served us well.
so I left Stanley to sleep while I situated the car. I couldn’t drive back to the hotel without losing my spot in line to have the car shipped so he had to walk to the ferry terminal. This is his ‘i had to walk’ look.
me, politely waiting for Stanley
quick video chat with my beautiful wife. miss this face every minute I’m away from her
leaning into his happy place
this woman just took my standing spot and is trying to move into Stanley’s space. Ostensibly to make him uncomfortable to encourage him to move so she can annex both of our standing spots.. little does she know Stanley is never uncomfortable. he’s pushing back - counter attack!
Stanley has assumed full ownership of both of the standing spots.
oh my
we made it!!!
3200 miles with my 73-year-old father-in-law.
