You know what, let’s watch some Nets/Bucks Game 3.
This is probably what Milwaukee was looking for defensively with Giannis on Griffin. Show on Kyrie, recover. Switch to Harris on the handoff. Brook guarding Brown allows him to roam and help in the paint.
Giannis as a screener for Milwaukee has been money but for the love of everything please put some seasoning on it. If you know Brooklyn doesn't want to switch and it's a drop, let's not have Giannis rolling towards two help defenders. Draws a foul but still.
Bucks kept Lopez back in a drop which simplifies a whole lot but also puts a whole lot of pressure on the guards to navigate. If the Nets screen, you see the space KD and Kyrie have to operate with. These are tougher to live with when you're down or late in games.
Every time I think I have the process for the Bucks defensively down I see something like this where Kyrie comes off a handoff from Blake and Giannis is dropped back and the Nets get a good look.
One of the best possessions Milwaukee has had all series process wise and this what they have to get to tempo/movement wise. Force the Nets to rotate, react and keep guarding. Middleton hits Jrue, he drives and kicks to Lopez. Swing, another drive, PJ hits Giannis cutting.
Thought the Bucks did a better job being active vs. off ball movement, trying to be more physical. You see Tucker trying to deny KD here. It's not just Bruce Brown's roll, he's got the subtle things that "bigs" do down. Watch him hit KD and then stay in the pocket while rolling.
Giannis screens for Middleton here and again he's rolling towards two help defenders. Middleton snakes and get to his shot but it becomes very much a "does he score or not" type deal. Harris recovers but...this is what Middleton does.
If you're Milwaukee this is what you're trying to get scheme wise. Brown sets the screen, Lopez is dropped back to protect. PJ Tucker fights over the top and chases with Lopez protecting. Kevin Durant didn't care about any of that.
It felt like early the Bucks did a better job vs. Brooklyn's movement. Jrue denies Kyrie, physical and Brook protects the back cut. That hold allows Jrue to recover and now it's 1v1.
Good and bad for Milwaukee offensively here. Jrue screens for Giannis and I wish Giannis would actually attack the show instead of just waiting for Kyrie to recover. Either way he drives, defense is showing help and closing to Tucker to leave Middleton is....interesting.
Giannis was hitting Claxton with that NBA2K blow by glitch in this one.
It's the Bucks process for me. Giannis screens for Jrue here which is fine but it's high on the floor so Kyrie gets to go under. Rolling to a two man side so Claxton stays in his drop. Giannis doesn't roll. Ends up scoring, post fade is a good counter but it could be easier.
This is the tricky part on *both* sides with Khris Middleton. To get the production he's going to take shots like this. To limit the Bucks you want to contest shots like this. You can live with it until you can't.
Giannis screens for Middleton here again and...Giannis again is rolling towards two defenders. Pocket is there but Griffin able to drop and meet him on catch, Shamet can give a quick stunt and recover. Why. This is also where Jrue helps because he just goes and finds a bucket.
Y'all really made ESPN tell you when the real tipoff time is.
Bruce Brown floaters got the Nets back into it. The big thing is that he was hitting these *over* Lopez when Lopez was still in a drop. The question becomes can it become enough to bend the defense? Do the Nets end up having the pull-up and the roll?
The Bucks just bogged all the way down in the second quarter. Again. Sometimes you have to balance shot quality with putting pressure on defenses. Did you get good looks or are those ones the defense is ok living with?
Giannis screens for Jrue here and again he is rolling towards two help defenders. You get James to help on the nail which is great but just *imagine* if instead of PJ Tucker that was Khris Middleton. And imagine if that corner was empty. Season the food.
I would bookmark this action if I'm Milwaukee. Double drag for Jrue, Middleton/Giannis as screeners. KD does a good job showing help so Jrue can't keep Blake engaged but this would put pressure on the Nets defense.
Bruce Brown just does the little things when he's screening which is not a natural deal for a guard. Screen, re-screen, gets back in position to make sure he gets a hit. Roll and finishes over Lopez. The finishing over is key. Bonus points to Kyrie for emptying the corner.
Bruce Brown has been *sitting* on the spin move from Giannis this series. Feels like every time he goes to it Bruce Brown is *right there*.
Giannis vs. Claxton has been fun.
Giannis has had the advantage attacking Claxton in 1v1 and ISO situations. Post up is where it gets interesting. Giannis can still deliver the first blow but the space gap isn't the same. And one thing Claxton is going to do, stay in front and contest.
The other thing about Bruce Brown as a roller is you can use him as a pick and roll threat even if you have a big in. Bucks stashed Forbes on him and Nets went *right* to P&R. Good first show, Brown re-screens, show is there but Kyrie able to turn corner and pull-up.
Giannis is guarding Harris, Jrue is guard KD. Harris comes to screen for KD. This should be a switch. That's why you have the personnel. Instead Giannis is dropped back, Jrue pursues, open pick and pop for Harris.
Milwaukee ends up getting a stop and it does end up in a late switch but what was the point of switching Giannis on to Blake if it's just going to be a drop?
I don't know if the Nets shift to just spamming Kevin Durant pick and roll but....he's getting a good look the majority of the time against the drop.
I'm not going to spam the clips but Blake Griffin has worked his tail off vs. Giannis this series.
Just look at this. Milwaukee has Giannis on Blake, Lopez o n Brown. The Nets actually have Blake dribble handoff with Durant. You would imagine this is an easy switch and you would imagine incorrectly. Giannis stays back, Tucker fights but Durant gets right to a pull-up 3.
Nets have found some exploits in the Brown/Lopez matchup but the one thing it does is allow Lopez to roam and help in the paint. Harris gets the handoff and drives, Lopez right there to protect and meet him at the rim.
Would you look at this. Giannis screens for Middleton, Jrue is in the weakside corner and he rises up. Strong side feels like they have to help, opens up a drive and kick to Lopez for 3. Just season it. Please.
PJ Tucker vs. Kevin Durant.
Y'all shared this clip for 3 days and no one talked about Fred sliding in cool as a cucumber right to KD. Fred's the man.
So you flipped the matchups and put Giannis on Blake to keep Brook out of the drop only Brook is staying on the drop vs. Bruce Brown oh and Giannis is *also* staying in a drop AND I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.
Giannis screens for Middleton and this is good defense from Joe Harris to stay attached, fight over the top, keep the drive in front and contest. It's also an incredibly unseasoned pick and roll.
Me staring at the takes flying on the timeline after a playoff game.
Just look at Thanasis on this possession. All of the energy. Rotates to the pop, sticks with the drive. And then look man he's just running *everywhere*. Ends up getting a block and gets the crowd hype.
