Youth was on display as 13-year-old Rayssa Leal of Brazil won silver in women’s street skateboarding. Momiji Nishiya of Japan, who is also 13, won gold.
Ariarne Titmus of Australia, in Lane 3, outswam Katie Ledecky of the U.S., in Lane 4, in the 400-meter freestyle. Ledecky led for much of the race but Titmus finished stronger to win the gold.
Naomi Osaka needed just 65 minutes to get past Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, 6-3, 6-2. The women’s singles field opened up widely for her as two other top players lost.
The U.S. softball team celebrated a walkoff home run by Kelsey Stewart to beat Japan. The teams will play again on Tuesday for a gold medal.
The men’s triathlon began with a hiccup: The athletes were set to begin their 1,500-meter swim in Tokyo Bay when a media boat got in the way.
Some athletes even dove in before the boat was fully out of the way. The race was restarted 10 minutes later.
