“High quality One Piece chapter” thread
#ONEPIECE #onepiece1019
Ok, first.
It should be a common sense that scan is not the best representation for artwork quality.
The magazine was purposely made with low production cost. Of course it would be darker, thicker, and messier. Especially when you compared them to the cleaned volume releases.
Fortunately, we are in the era of digital manga publishing. Popular manga like berserk, vinland saga, aot, opm, etc. were released digitally in Japanese or English.
That include WSJ series, where we can read the latest chapter for free.
So, in order to find the best version.
This is the comparison of all one piece digital chapters available. Starting with the three main version.
English – viz & mangaplus
Spanish - mangaplus
Japanese - shonen jump plus
Resolution (high)
Viz - 1145p
Jap - 1400p
Spa - 2100p (2560p double spread)
With the current technology, we can upscale them as much as we want. But the tiny details can’t be restored. Just look at the screentones and hatching for the indicator.
Oda’s panels had became smaller & busier over the time, and reading one piece in this small resolution didn’t help either.
Take this sequences when zoro momentarily blocked yonko’s combined attack in ch. 1009. We need to read one piece in larger screen possible. At least 1500p.
Dimension/crop
Spanish >>> viz & sjp
In fact, it’s the closest way to get Oda’s original artwork without cropping, that even surpassing the volume version.
Do resolution & crop matter? Absolutely.
Especially for the theorist out there.
One Piece is a mystery adventure series.
Oda notoriously likes to put tiny details in his drawing.
For instance: the falling ship in ch. 997
Or when Wanda was cropped in ch. 977. Even the anime completely missed her.
You should definitely check the Spanish version for the artwork alone.
However, there is one problem with this version. The quality dropped significantly in some chapters.
For instance: in ch. 1017 the lineart & screentone were distorted. This could be just a wrong on my end, so please check them out.
So, here’s another alternatives, use VPN.
Thai, Indonesian, and Portuguese version.
All have the same resolution as Spanish, except for Indo 2048p (1820p double spread)
The sharpness and contrast however, Indo >>>> the rest
Typesetting
Viz >>>>>> the rest.
Viz lettering really is the kind you should strive for.
This simple, neat and clean typesetting is a nice contrast to Oda’s busy drawing. Seriously, you don’t have to fill every corner of the balloon. Even the scan does it better.
Dimension/crop
Thai version is basically almost no crop.
Thai > Spanish > the rest.
This is digital manga, not physical. There is no reason for this needless crop.

SFX
Por and Thai madlad, they’re redrawing sfx as if this is a volume release.
The placement and pattern choice of Indo version is the weakest one here. Oda uses 3 screentones (SBS 59), tries to matched them.
If you can’t, then doing sfx like viz is the best option.
Ok, moving on.
The last version I want to talk about is the Arab scanlation.
This is by far the best version I’ve ever seen (2400p), better than any version in mangaplus.
But the real question is, “where they get this chapter from?”
China? South Korea? Or is there another version?
If anyone know where and how to access them, please let us know.
Lastly, I didn’t make this thread to diminished one version or another. Especially for Viz and Indonesian version, since these two is the one I care about.
Keep supporting mangaplus, your language will available someday.
And that conclude this thread. Feel free to add or correct me. I would love to know more about this topic.
I will make this kind of thread in the future, consider this my optwt, I guess.
Thanks for reading. #optwt
Speaking of sfx.
I do like this new approach of not redrawing sfx from @comic_lxlc . I understand the reasoning and 100% will support it.
However, could you please not leave the balloon-sfx like these? It's been three volumes, yet it still happening.
Also, colorwalk when?
It still happening #onepiece1020
Please check, set the resolution to high.
