MARA in Buddhism, is the Demonic Celestial King who tempted Prince Siddhartha (Gautama Buddha) by trying to seduce him with vision of beautiful women who, in various legends, are said to be Mara's 3 Daughters.

MARA is the embodiment of death, rebirth, greed, delusion & DESIRE.

Early Buddhism acknowledged both a literal & psychological interpretation.

Mara is described both as an entity having an existence in Kāma-Loka (World of Desire) & the guardian of passion, the catalyst for lust, hesitation & fear. Mara is the "One Who Delights in Destruction".

Other Legends state that Māra didn't send his 3 daughters to tempt but instead they came willingly to help deter the Buddha's quest. Mara's 3 Daughters, the 3 Poisons are identified as Taṇhā (Thirst), Arati (Aversion, Discontentment) & Rāga (Attachment, Desire, Greed, Passion).

Hades (Greek), Pluto (Roman), Osiris (Egyptian), Yama (Hindu) were all considered the King of the Underworld: Tartarus, Hades, Patala & the Du'at.

While, Thatanos (Greek), Mors/ Letum (Roman), Azreal (Abrahamic/ Angel of Death), MARA (Buddhism) & Yama (Hindu) personified Death.

In Hinduism, Chitragupta (Sanskrit: 'Rich in Secrets' or 'Hidden Picture') is part of Lord of the Underworld Yama's Court, like Thoth, assigned with the task of keeping complete records of the actions of human beings & punishing or rewarding them according to their karma.
