Finally out today! after 4 years of struggle here it is... we found that signals derived from chloroplasts control alternative splicing of several genes in roots! ...a thread... (1/9)
cell.com/cell-reports/f…

We wondered how... what is the nature of the signals that reach the roots and affect nuclear decisions in root cells... (2/9)

as some of you might already imagine, this is a sweet story! sugars derived from photosynthesis travel through the plant and reach the roots... yes! we know, but that's just the beginning, you'll see... (3/9)

...directly from the candy shop in the leaves, sugars reach the root cells, go through glycolysis and activate the mitochondria (thanks Sheen and Xiong!)... (4/9)

and then... this is activating the TOR kinase pathway!!! (5/9 1Thor/2)

TOR kinase activity controls alternative splicing outcomes in roots! (6/9 2Thor/2)

So... chloroplasts in leaves talk to mitochondria in roots, via sugars, and TOR kinase, being awared of this conversation, sends a signal that modulates alternative splicing outcomes in the nucleus! Shocked?? (7/9)

We have a beautiful piece of art that summarizes all these findings made by the great Luciana Giono (lhttps://www.instagram.com/lucianagiono)! (8/9)

This story started long ago (I was a PhD student) and it was also (is?) the main subject of my lab during our first steps. Congrats and thanks to my dream team: @S92_Lucas @micagherz @steriegler @ChrisMeyer_TORP @BrunkardLab #Regina #Guish #BartaLab #KalynaLab (9/9)

Bonus (10/9 ?? 3Thor/2???)

...yet another great piece of art by Luciana Giono! Thanks for reading the whole thread!

If you reached this final (?) Tweet you deserve something else... Here's a tool from @PeterVenhuizen to find the alternative isoforms of your favorite gene! A corollary of our work!
