New Fortress Energy put in their planning application recently for #ShannonLNG, which they call STEP. This is a thread about the massive climate threat contained in their plans and the blatant #greenwash plastered all through their application 1/
While NFE say this is "A STEP toward Zero" what they also say is "Direct emissions from the operation of the Proposed Development will equate to approximately 963kt CO2e in 2030, around 2.1% of Ireland’s carbon allowance if Ireland’s carbon reduction targets are met." 2/
These admitted emissions are only part of the story. The 8 data centres in their masterplan aren't in this application. "The design of the potential Data Centre Campus is not advanced to the stage where the quantity of emissions and impact/ effect of those emissions is known" 3/
The "Direct emissions" also don't include the emissions on how the gas is sourced. It will be #frackedgas but NFE say "it is neither necessary nor appropriate to include particulars of any one place where source gas might be extracted." 4/
NFE include an "Operations & Development" map which includes their LNG import facilities and power plants but seems to have forgotten to include any LNG export facilities or operations in the US. 5/
NFE have forgotten to include their gas liquefaction terminal in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania or their LNG export facility in Gibbstown, New Jersey. 6/
NFE are trying to get the world hooked on US fracked gas but telling us they will "help lead the transition to a zero-carbon future for Ireland" /7
The Shannon LNG application says NFE "are already working towards a net-zero future", while this promotional NFE video tells how they are getting Latin America hooked on US fracked gas. 8/
Worryingly they say that STEP is consistent with state agencies scenarios for creating a carbon-free Ireland. But what this is really telling us is that CRU, Eirgrid and particularly GNI scenarios are full of greenwash also. 9/
Before the last election @EamonRyan said about Shannon LNG, "This is a Climate Change Issue of the First Order" yet the door has been left open for this application, which will now be decided on by Bord Pleanala. 10/
It's been very quiet from the Irish climate movement on this project, since the planning application was put in. There has been near silence apart from the @AideenODoc of @NHNAireland article. 11/

It shouldn't be left to Bord Pleanala to decide whether fracked gas is to be imported.This project would be adding a 1.6% increase to current CO2 emissions & become the 3rd largest emitting facility in the State. It's time to actively oppose it and not just hope! 12/12
