A thread of some of my favorite pieces from JC Leyendecker, one of the most prolific and talented illustrators of the 20th century.

The first thing many notice, correctly, is a stylistic resemblance to Norman Rockwell. Leyendecker, 20 years his senior, was a major influence on Rockwell; and they were good friends. Rockwell was even a pallbearer at JC’s funeral.

As a leading illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post from 1899-1943, it would be hard to overstate the influence Leyendecker had on the aesthetic culture of 20th century America.

Taxxed straight from wiki, he’s credited with “the New Year's Baby, the pudgy red-garbed rendition of Santa Claus, flowers for Mother's Day, and firecrackers on the 4th of July.”

I’m particularly fond of his depictions of athletes
