Keke looks great but honestly, I'm already bored
I am into Anna Wintour's weird floral thing though
ooh an actually interesting suit
the theme is American couture so obviously Valentino is the right choice here
I don't like this but I don't have a good reason for disliking it
I forgot who this is but showing up in a gown of ERA and suffragette stuff is incredible
this livestream is not only buggy but deeply unfulfilling as a part of the human experience
Ooh we have a full body shot of La Wintour
I really like this? The sleek silhouette broken up by ruffles + the joyous floral is great
the puffed sleeves with the severe lines and damask? into it
yesss
this is boring. I'm bored.
into it? I think?
Paul Atreides is the perfect role for Timothée Chalamet because he's always dressed like a galactic boy-emperor
Eva Chen in Christopher John Rogers, whose clothes I absolutely ADORE, so it's nice to know this is him, and also embarrassing that I didn't recognize it
I expected more from Tom Ford
why is every couple here dressed like this I want to scream and then die
James Corden showed up in a Gucci tux and he looks exactly like…James Corden in a tux
okay I hate this but I respect the HELL out of the ambition
1) at least he isn't in a tux
2) he has jewels in his hair
Amanda Gorman looks good but she's looked better
wow another stunning red carpet look from james corden
oh Amanda's makeup looks great! and her clutch has a quote from the statue of liberty
this is another case where I don't like it, but I like that it isn't what everyone else is wearing
the men are just TRAGIC this time around
same as it ever was
no <3
I'm just
annoyed
okay the more angles I get of Amanda Gorman the more I'm into what she's doing
maisie what are you doing what's going on
again I hate it but: it's not what everyone else is doing
(also I DO like the jacket in isolation)
CHANNING TATUM YOU COULD HAVE DONE LITERALLY ANYTHING BUT WHAT YOU DID (a tux)
okay I am into this vaguely Mae West pearl thing
although part of me thinks it's only standing out because almost everything else is so dire
I think I'd like this better without the sort of haunted doll makeup?
I don't know who half these people are help
eh
I always respect when people show up in something that occupies 67% of the carpet but
eh
it always fascinates me when someone shows up in something like this
their MIND
lol Gr*mes showed up with a sword
Saweetieeee
Lil Nas X is doing a Billy Porter bless him
okay YES???
I haven't seen a ton of Serena on red carpets but I trusted her and I was not let down
hardly anyone is on theme
the man's COMMITMENT, he always looks like the final boss in a game I want to play
the LAYERS
the Josephine Baker-inspired look makes me happy
you know what?
yes
yes Marcus THANK you
this reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on what exactly
the purse! the shoes! the ANGLES
genderbent Lórien and Mandos cosplays
sorry but if I don't make at least one Silmarillion reference in a livetweet then I have failed at a personal AND a professional level
lord knows I love me some Iris van Herpen but I also kind of hate it when people show up to the Met Gala in something I've already seen (looking at you too, Grimes)
IMAN
if you can find a video of Iman in this, watch it. the motion is hypnotic
thank you Debby Harry for punk Betsy Ross
for fuck's sake, kit
for the sake of fuck
would wear the shirt
would set fire to everything else
amandla stenberg getting on the red carpet and talking about the voices america steals from is the most on theme anyone has been so far
this is what the met gala is all about
there are so many shapes and textures here and they all WORK
this is so funny to me
tbh this is probably the sort of thing I'd have worn if my invitation hadn't gotten lost in the mail
honestly between Iman and Lil Nas X i don't know why anyone else bothered to show up
YES TRACEE YES
I refuse to acknowledge this
I feel like I'm supposed to understand this but I've blocked out like 78% of the American history I learned
B L E S S
I believe this is from the Dior tarot collection which, okay, but the theME, the THEME
Kris Jenner shows up looking exactly like...Kris Jenner
Excellent
I’m skipping a lot of things that I just don’t care about because there are only so many ways to say “I’m bored”
she looks fantastic
I like it but the GLOVE elevates it
ooh I think this is by Robert Wun? certainly looks like his stuff
yes
I'm a sucker for this sort of thing
something about this is giving me "native-inspired tag on Etsy" vibes and I don't know if that's a me-problem or what
Mary J. Blige said her dress was inspired by "looking fabulous" and I appreciate that so much
if you absolutely must go with a silhouette this simple, at least pick colors this vibrant
I would wear these
no I don't know why Frank Ocean has a green baby
I think he said in his interview segment why he had it, but someone started talking to me and I forgot
lmao at Vogue making it impossible to see fully what AOC's dress says
TAX THE RICH
Emily Blunt giving a three-quarter Ziegfeld
you'd think with Old Hollywood Glamour™️ being a big part of American fashion history, more people would have really leaned into it
ciara I dunno about this
iconic.
seeing more IVH on the red carpet than I expected?
WOW
AOC appearing in a Tax The Rich dress really summons up the tensions I try to bury while talking about the Met Gala; I love looking at everything—even when I hate looking at it—but the fact remains that this is like peeking in the windows of a charity ball at Versailles
no thanks
yes PLEASE
the silhouette wouldn't flatter anyone but I'm so pleased by the textures
genuinely thought Erykah Badu was holding a gun and I was like "yep that's America"
Kim Kardashian, wielder of one of the Nine Rings
everything Shawn Mendes does I forget instantly. I'm not even sure I'm seeing this picture right now
I don't know if there's any reason Orville Peck would be here but I wish he was
seriously so much IVH
I appreciate that Sharon Stone apparently heard "the theme is America" and went "okay so Cartoon Villain then"
I do genuinely wonder how many people decided to opt out of following the theme because they couldn't say anything nice
this country doesn't uhhhhhh have the easiest legacy to engage with
which is why I appreciate Amandla Stenberg being here
another angle, love it, love the Specter At The Feast ominousness
the asymmetry works for me but not the look overall
I already lost the notification but whoever asked about the Masque of the Red Death:
no, so far nobody is explicitly dressed as that, but yes, someone absolutely should be
I don't know Morse code so until someone tells me this dress says something hideously offensive, I'm gonna decide I like it
you can always rely on Regina King
ooh this is SO CLOSE to being the Red Death
OOH OOH OOH OOH OOH: NO
like I enjoy a lot of these elements separately but these look like the worst shorts in history
this probably isn't on theme but I always enjoy seeing Whoopie
the Star Trek vibes
I say go for it
between this and Lupita we are being SHOWN how to use denim
I would be so embarrassed if this happened to me
a Black man wearing something that kinda resembles a bulletproof vest at a celebration of American couture feels like a pretty pointed commentary, and it looks great, too
I dunno how I feel about this otherwise, but at least it's a whole lot of visual risks, and after 30 million plain black tuxes I'm happy to see something else
if I say I appreciate something it's always sincere, if I say I love something there's a non-zero chance it's the leadup to a mean joke
this is so pleasing, especially with that touch of turquoise cooling the aggressive greenish yellow
the jewelry!
this is a great red carpet look
I've tried to stop dinging people for not being on theme because so many people DIDN'T care that it feels unfair to pick on all of them
tried, not necessarily succeeded
THANK YOU, EUGENE
I really appreciate the soft fall of white tulle among the tailored black, especially when I think about the way it would swoop and flutter when he moves
knocked backward out of my chair by the vibes
is that...a leather snake?
every Met Gala like 40 ppl show up named Bungalow Pasolini or Camille (no last name) and everyone is like “omg I loved/hated their last album/movie/vlog & they have my undying loyalty/are canceled” and I’m still trying to catch up on who was famous when I was in elementary school
I was born old and confused and I’ll die even older and way more confused
I will not make the obvious cruella joke I will not
yknow, it’s working for me
a velvet suit????? this is the kind of wild, out-there, no-holds-barred, I-have-seen-the-face-of-god-and-she-is-Miranda-Priestly risktaking that’ll get you on “20 Best-Dressed Men” lists!!!!!! have you ever seen ANYTHING like this????? KING
a velvet suit! man, now I’ve seen it all!!
I guess it’s probably unfair to complain about men wearing basic tuxes and then make fun of them when they don’t, but like, Eugene Lee Yang is out here in red heels and Lil Nas X is a figureskating robot emperor
not every man is gonna be comfortable outside of a certain range but also, this is the met gala, you can be reasonably sure you won’t be the strangest person in the room
The red carpet is over but there’s a specific look I caught a glimpse of but haven’t see posted anywhere in its entirety. I won’t be free until I find it.
tbh the met gala peaked with heavenly bodies and I don’t think anything will recapture that magic
D A M N
I don’t see how it’s on theme, which is unusual for Rihanna, who’s always understood the assignment before, but like
DAMN
it’s always nice to see Balenciaga, especially with that regal silhouette made up of little more than some folded fabric, but the little sparks of jewelry really bring it to life
obliged to share the reliable Gemma Chan even if I don’t think this is one of the stronger looks today
Ooh okay these colors are working for me, the temptation with the met gala is to go for really loud palettes (which is great) so the subtle pinks and greys end up standing out next to everyone else
another Christopher John Rogers. he always does things with structure that I find very pleasing, like here with the hard lines of the bodice rising out of the swirling drape of the skirt
I’ve seen this gown before and I hated it then too, sorry
I like the colors on her but that silhouette, no thanks
I will not show you all what jimmy fallon wore but whatever you pictured when I said “jimmy fallon” is gonna be accurate
yeah alright!!
someone else already tweeted more knowledgeably about J Lo but here, for posterity
YOOOOO
I think this is closer to heavenly bodies but I will NOT quibble, this is fantastic
I like the color on him but he’s done better, this kind of seems like he happened by on his way somewhere else
I want the shoes and I’ll accept the delightfully tacky suit as a leftover from the camp gala
I can’t find the look I’m looking for....the one that will release me from this thread. I guess I have to accept it was either Nina Parker in that regal gold number above, or a hallucination brought on by an overdose of Vogue
one more look at this though. one of my favorites from a largely disappointing event
okay now that I’ve burned up like six hours of my life caring about what millionaires put on their backs, time to go do literally anything but that
I hardly ever put out a tip jar but if some of those rich people could pay me for looking at their clothes,
paypal.me/JPechacek
late-breaking: Lili Reinhart’s Siriano dress has all fifty state flowers on it; apparently
I will probably have more coherent thoughts later but part of what made this gala pretty bland is that nobody seemed to know what the theme meant. “Camp” is hard to hit but at least there’s a target. “America: A Lexicon of Fashion” means…what?
A focus on American designers? A focus on traditions developed here? The costume institute says it’s “a modern vocabulary of American fashion based on its expressive qualities”, but what does that mean? And was it in evidence tonight?
And so the red carpet ends up being a mishmash, with a lot of the standard European designers, when there are smaller designers working in the country right now who are doing incredible work, so if you’re gonna find something good in this miserable place, they’re right there
As a goddamn normie I do like me some standard European designers, many of whom were influenced by American ideas back in the day, but I just think there was a huge missed opportunity here, either to buy local (as it were), or to dress like Dolly Parton
Anyway the theme was unclear, but also is there anything more American than a lot of rich people congratulating themselves for the bare minimum? Probably not
OKAY THIS, I THINK THIS IS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR TO END THIS THREAD EARLIER
QUANNAH CHASINGHORSE IN GOLD AND TURQUOISE
I am.....free
Related: vogue.com/article/quanna…
missed Lee Pace earlier, always love seeing him, but oh my god so much fucking Thom Browne everywhere, it’s like the gala was attended by a bunch of overgrown British schoolboys
this “nude under a sparkly net” thing is now obligatory at every red carpet, I swear
to expand a little on this, I love the Met Gala, and no matter the cause, a number of wealthy people won't give money unless they get a big flashy event; the museum has to survive somehow, and it should.
it just FEELS like this to watch it
there's this tension I always feel between "this is how a worthy cause has to make its money" and "this is not how a worthy cause should HAVE to make its money", yknow?
but on some third or fourth hand: shiny clothes
