No-Bullsh!t advice on how to write DMs for Twitter newbies

(and older accounts in case you're doing it wrong πŸ‘€)

πŸ“Έ Screenshots from my own inbox ⬇

❌ "Hi thanks for following me."
And then nothing.

No interaction, no exchange, nothing to offer, not even a question.

Why did you bother to DM me then?

βœ… DM with a purpose.

Examples of purpose:

1. Introduce yourself

β†’ mention what you tweet about
β†’ say you're glad they found your profile interesting

πŸ’‘ Don't introduce yourself to a NEW follower, say this to someone who has interacted with your tweets

2. Offer something

β†’ don't sell your shit in the first DM
β†’ don't even promote a thread you want more engagement on
(Unless you're SURE they'd appreciate it)

What to offer, that is the question. Read on.

You're trying to make friends here. Get to know them.

Check out their profile, find out what they're into.

β†’ Go see what they've pressed the Like button on.

Why don't people do that before sending a DM? I don't get it.

Back to the point.

What to offer:

β†’ Only offer something you can be sure they're interested in.
β†’ First, engage with them outside of DMs
β†’ Build rapport + get an idea of what you may offer.

This is what Arthur did. @DevLinguistic
(More on his opening DM later πŸ‘€) πŸ‘‡πŸ»πŸ‘‡πŸ»

3. Ask a question

β†’ about things on their Bio, and what they do
β†’ follow up on a tweet they wrote
β†’ ask for their input, advice, or feedback
β†’ hell, ask what they'd like to see more from you
(and then deliver)

@TylerOGuinn: What an exchange!

πŸ’‘ Ask what they'd like to see & serve that

DM the link and say:

"Thank you for the idea."
"Writing this reminded me of what you said."

Being involved in someone's creating process is so cool.
If someone did this for me, I'd invite them to my wedding πŸ˜‚

The next purpose is ⬇

4. Common interests

- I'm not done talking about checking their Likes.
- and replies for that matter

If they're liking a lot of stuff about Notion, it's their whole thing, man!

If you don't know squat about Notion, now is your chance to ask them about it. Be curious.

It is so weird to say "be curious" because you either ARE or you aren't. Maybe you can't flick a switch to just start BEING curious.

But you can try.

β†’ Check out their profile and compliment something

Here's how to be attentive:

β†’ Point out what you have in common with them

Brownie points if that Thingβ„’ you have in common is mentioned in your Bio.

@abhishektalks nailed it.

Arthur's opening DM which he later followed by "offering" me a pdf πŸ‘‡πŸ»

βœ” talked to me in comments first
βœ” referred to previous interactions
βœ” pointed out a common interest
βœ” complimented my thread
βœ” despite being new to Twitter, I wasn't creeped out
βœ” and yet, it is brief

Now, it is time for MY messages.

Here's a quick rundown of 10 different *types* of DMs that I did for #hypefurychallenge:

This time, you get to see screenshots of those DMs + Quick Tips + my Template at the end πŸ‘‡πŸ»πŸ‘‡πŸ»

(When I review something, I review it with my heart lol)

Shout out to my friend @CopyEzekiel and his newsletter– The Copy Writing SAUCE: thecopywritingsauce.substack.com

My favorite part of the Sauce is when he analyses the Copy on a website and then Edits it to make it way more effective, genius!

I always take notes from it.

When in doubt, DM the person who is already doing what you aspire to do.

You're on Twitter to make meaningful connections, and DM is easily the most effective.

@MattHogan123

me: I'll have screenshots from so many people

also me: 99% screenshots from Arthur alone
🀣

But seriously, who doesn't love giving advice? Ask for advice.

For your very first DM, write to someone you're excited to talk to. It was @nivdatta88 for me.

Referring to previous interactions is always nice.

Also adding one that I received and appreciated. Thank you, @01ayushgarg !

I went and DMed the King of DMs– @IAmElijas

My whole year was made πŸ˜‚

Quick Tips:

βœ… Engage in comments, introduce yourself in DMs

βœ… Offer something of interest and value

βœ… Ask a question, the first of many

βœ… Highlight common interests

BONUS:

βœ… Keep it open-ended
Leave something for them to add to.
Don't write letters. "Yours sincerely" is close-ended.

❌ Don't be creepy
Don't message a very new account
Check when they joined Twitter
Engage outside of DMs first

I got this on day 2 of joining. AwkwardπŸ‘‡πŸ»

βœ… Dodge the anxiety. Use a template.

Here's mine:

"Hey, First Name!
How are you today?

I wanted to say a quick hello/thanks/congrats/question/request.

Have a good day + cute emoji"

πŸ™Š Lastly, spell their name right.

Women share examples of bad DMs all the time.
So I've collected screenshot proof of good ones in this thread.

We need more examples of goodness

so Retweet the top tweet,

or add your own screenshot of a good DM to this thread πŸ‘‡πŸ»
