The DCI Volleyball Queens have yet again stamped their authority as the undisputed Nyerere Cup Champions, after thrashing a stubborn Hakika 3 straight set to naught in all Kenyan affair. In an entertaining encounter that brought the packed

Ngarenaro sports complex to a standstill, the sleuths displayed pure skill as they snatched point after another, to claim the title. During the group stages, our girls had ‘arrested’ Hakika but the team mischievously fought its way back to the finals.

However, unlike in the group stages where they managed one set against us, this time round they left the pitch limping from our beating without a single set. Captain Caroline Sirengo unleashed wild athleticism by blocking almost every shot from Hakika,

to claim the set 25 points against the opponent’s 15. The two then teams switched sides for an intense 2nd set that was a roller coaster, as they interchanged the lead a couple of times culminating to final score of 25-21 in favour of our sleuths.

But the climax of the match was yet to come in the third and final set, when head coach Daniel Bor, a tactical marksman in the DCI shooting team introduced sensation right attacker Marion Indeche to the game. Supplied with beautiful sets by Jane Mumbua and Faith Imondia, Indeche

punished Hakika for every mistake that their middle blocker made, inflicting heavy injuries on their libero who could not handle her powerful strikes! The fans were in a frenzied mood as our girls who are the youngest in the Kenyan volleyball league,

ignited violence in the pitch sending their opponents scampering on the floor in search of the ball. At the blow of the final whistle, it was victory for DCI and Kenya as we took home the Nyerere Cup for the third time, punishing Hakika 25-15! Earlier, our girls had handcuffed

Tanzania’s Magereza, to qualify for the finals. As if DCI’s victory wasn't enough, the General Service Unit unleashed terror on MTC of Tanzania in the men’s category, beating them 3 sets to 1 in an encounter that left Tanzanian fans electrified.

In a classic showcase of sportsmanship, GSU who are also the national champions left no doubt in the minds of their opponents and the fans alike, that they are indeed the undisputed volleyball champions regionally and in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The towering height of the lanky young men only added salt to injury on their opponents, as they reigned havoc on their territory. Whether MTC recovers from the onslaught by Kenya’s elite commandos is a story for another day.

But at the end of the competitions, it was victory for all the teams that participated, after displaying a high spirit of comradeship in the one week competition. The event staged on the foot of Mt Meru in Arusha, is held every year in honour of former Tanzania statesman,

Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. The technical bench comprised of head coach Daniel Bor, team manager Neddy Kilimo, team doctor Elizabeth Isekere and driver John Serem.

DCI’s Deputy Director of Personnel Francis Ndiema led the delegation accompanied by Personal Assistant to the DCI Lawrence Some and DCI’s O/C Comms & Public Affairs Mike Mugo.
